Plug the NIC into the Sempron box. If it works there, then the GA-6WMMC7 is half-dead and ready for recycling.

According to MobyGames, Bookworm requires Windows 2000 or greater, so maybe Windows 2000 should be your OS. Using Windows 2000 instead of Windows 98 SE shouldn't be a problem for you though, since all of the games that you listed have Windows versions. Is there a Windows "Certificate of Authenticity …

Which games do you want to play using this computer? The i810's integrated video is a weak 3D accelerator, based on the i740. For 3D-accelerated games, you'll want to add a PCI video card.

Were you using Windows 98 Second Edition? Support for WDM audio is supposed to be better in Windows 98 Second Edition. (At least that's what Wikipedia tells me.)

In DOSBox, Alt+Enter switches between full-screen and windowed modes. Ctrl+F10 gets your mouse out of the DOSBox window (in windowed mode) so that you can do other things. This might be a solution to the poor-sounding MIDI music in SimCity 2000: Improving Midi sounds

If I were you, I would spend a few dollars on eBay or at your local Mom & Pop computer shop to acquire an ISA Sound Blaster 16, AWE32 or AWE64. If you get an AWE32 or AWE64 and use AWEUTIL to redirect the MIDI to the wavetable, then the MIDI music in DOS will be glorious ! You could even keep the …

Does your motherboard have an ISA slot? You could have even more retro purity and better compatibility with an ISA sound card instead of an AudioPCI. You are running these DOS games in real-mode DOS (for maximum retro purity and compatibility) without having Windows loaded, right?

Wikipedia's AudioPCI page reads, ...FM music was simulated using the Ensoniq wavetable, with the result that most FM soundtracks sounded little more than a jumble of cacophonous notes played on random MIDI instruments.... Maybe that explains the sound its off..sounds really strange There's no shame …
