Re: Ever wish something had replaced the floppy beside CDs?

in Milliways
I had a whole stack of a 100 5" cd-r's go bad on me once and a whole stack of 100 little 3" cd-r's as well. But that's after maybe a couple thousand disks from the past 15 years. Never had any DVD's crap out on me. I've had a number of flash drives die and maybe 25-35 personal HDD's die over the …

Re: How many (external) sound modules are enough?

PAS Zilog SCSI controller is limited to 690Kb/sec, which is equal to 4.6x CD-ROM speed. The only external MediaVision CD-ROM drive I know of is MediaVision Reno. It's a 2x drive. You need a MediaVision SCSI bracket to connect that drive to a PAS. Yeah, I meat Reno and not Rio. It was late and I had …

Re: How many (external) sound modules are enough?

Well its been awhile since I have worked with SCSI (which I just talked a bit about in another thread), but if I recall SCSI device drivers don't play well in UMB. I'm planning on a rather unique SCSI build with and external Media Vision PAS SCSI and external Media Vision RIO CD-ROM drive. I always …

Around 1998-1999 I was working tech support for Iomega. I thank all that is good in this world for that evil to have been abandoned. Hearing the words Zip Drive and Jaz Drive still send shivers down my spine. Hey, at least you didn't have to work with SparQ drives. So much better than the Jaz, and …

@Kodai ah, I did not knew of that newer revision MQ mpu, thanks for the link... this one seems to have integrated the Z8+ROM+SRAM in this 8bit MCU, probably compiled a new firmware for this specific chip... and ofcourse there is encryption as well... I never even considered any sort of encryption …

I knew it was getting out of hand and would be at least $300 so I gave up and let it go, but it was after the midiman auction was over. $300 is too much, but to someone that wants it that bad, its a bargain i guess. Oh well. Both those cards have the same problem with the Gateway games that Keropi …

Re: How many (external) sound modules are enough?

in Milliways
Yeah, pretty sure. The one I bought is the very first version of the card. I was the 2nd revision (ie two more models after mine) that seemed to have corrected the issue. I'll let you know when I have a new rig together to test it, but I'm pretty positive it'll crap itself on the attempt at Laser …

Re: How many (external) sound modules are enough?

@Kodai have you tried the MQ mpu with those problematic Gateway games? Does it work OK or does it fail to detect/play music? @retrofanatic good call on the battery :) No, I'm in the midst of building a new retro rig. I lost mine a few years ago while moving, and have been focusing on other vintage …

Re: Best OS for a 286?

in Milliways
All three later versions are excellent choices. Later versions of DR-DOS had support utils for GEM and Geoworks (cant remember what they were now as its been 20+ years), and PC-DOS just had the best overall extra utility programs plus it came with REXX which used to be very useful. Later versions of …

Re: How many (external) sound modules are enough?

in Milliways
A major drawback for my quest for the widest range of DOS game sound compatibility has been my failure in finding a fully intelligent mode compliant MPU-401 interface though...I do have some yamaha cards and AWE64 Gold, and a CT2230 (only UART mode of course) that I have heard to have some of the …

Re: Best OS for a 286?

I always found PC-DOS to be a great dos option for the 1000 line and would highly recommend it. I no longer have any 1000's (the original TL was my personal favorite), and never tried PC-DOS 2000 on it, but I assume it would be the best choice. The last version I used on any 1000 was PC-DOS 7 (and …

Re: Info needed on CM modules

in MT-32 General
Hmmm, I might just have to do that. Would have been nice to save some cash by getting the 32p, so that I could put it towards those funny little sound chips they use, but I think you may be right. Thanks for the opinion though. On a side note, I'd like to point out something about your video on de- …

Info needed on CM modules

in MT-32 General
Hey everybody, I swear I used the search engine and could not find an answer to this  , so I guess I'll have to create a new topic to ask. I'm pretty much covered on the MS-DOS midi front, as I have a MT-32 old, MT-32 NEW (in the form of an MT-100), CM-32l, SC-55 original first run version, …
