For closure: I found a sound card for cheaply when I stopped by a large flea market: A SIIG SoundWave 7.1 based on some CMI chip. It's a bit new, but it's compatible with 2000 at least, and has drivers that don't keel over in SMP. It'll do for now.

Because the people who play the old games with Steam on old systems are far outnumbered by people playing them on modern systems, and these optimizations and changes can improve the experience for them.

Was I running a different OS than everyone else? I had Vista SP0 and it was perfectly fast and stable, even when multitasking with 1 GB RAM. I had some shitty HW (SiS...) but Windows itself was stable as possible.

I thought Vista was limited to a DX10 point release via SP. edit: There's also some minor new APIs, but 7 also introduced major internal changes - breaking up large system libraries into smaller chunks.

Setting up a file server is a lot easier IMHO. If you don't feel comfortable reducing protocol security on your daily driver, then you could set up another computer running Samba or an older Windows to put files on. It'd be a lot simpler, IMHO, especially as Windows 3.x and 95 natively support SMB. …

Dishonored 2. Excellent level design and worldbuilding, personally topping the first game. Will love to do some replays someday - maybe it'll even top Deus Ex for me personally in the "replay yearly" department. Oh, and it ran fine on my potato with a Core 2 Duo.

IIRC, the client will actually work without SSE2, but the web views (store and profiles, etc.) will be broken. I recall them supporting an older version of CEF for those machines, but I guess they finally gave up.

For ISA devices, try adding a new device from the Add Hardware wizard - it should show available devices at least for ISA (I believe it hides PCI and USB) and it usually indicates WDM in the name.

I'll add that my Dell OEM GeForce 256 DDR looks like Serpent Rider's, complete with handwritten serial number on the tab. Not sure if memory chips are the same though.
