Re: How can I FAT32 format my hard disk?

in Milliways
XP won't allow you to format a FAT32 partition larger than 32GB (even though it can see and use such partitions). 98/ME will. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/314463 https://support.microsoft.com/EN-US/kb/255867

Re: DOS copy command

In the past I've used the DOSBox Megabuild to enable passthrough to the physical LPT port. See if it helps you: http://www.vogons.org/viewtopic.php?t=33268 However, the caveat is that the PortTalk utility mentioned there to actually enable said physical access may not work on Vista or newer. I have …

Re: Laptop upgrade

Can't go with a single SSD with this system. This 320GB HDD currently installed is already too small for the amount of things I keep in the laptop already, and a 500GB SSD is far too expensive for me to spend on a 5-year old budget laptop. A 500GB hybrid HDD should be much more affordable. Then buy …

Re: Old PCI WIFI Card

gdjacobs wrote: You don't need WDS. You need a router that can use client mode. WDS is a low performance way to extend WIFI coverage, akin to using a WIFI extender. WDS is more common than "client mode" in routers. In this particular case - would there really be a difference in performance? How …

Re: Old PCI WIFI Card

I don't think so. What he needs is a simple WDS Bridge . This feature is not uncommon on today's routers. In fact I'd say it's pretty standard. Furthermore, even my old router (an Edimax 6204Wg), which was a pretty basic router, and one that's at least 10 years old, has had this feature in its FW …

Re: Old PCI WIFI Card

Every router under the sun should have the hardware for that, but not the software. It doesn't matter that there are many routers that don't support this mode. What matters is that there are many routers that do. Choose one of them. That the configuration in this mode is somewhat more complicated …

Re: Talk about overkill.

The problem is that most higher clocked non-"value" sticks comes with those, as useless as they are. When I built my Haswell system all decent 16GB@1866MHz (I'd be happy with 1600MHz, but they were at the same price range) kits I could find had heatsinks... I just never bothered removing them. As …

Re: Talk about overkill.

Yeah, I don't think it's ever needed. It's just a marketing technique for gullible buyers, who think that if it has a big heatsink, it is somehow better. Well, that and looks for the geeks. I myself have a set of 4 OCZ Reapers in my desktop PC. Bought them before I realized it was silly.

Re: Thermal pastes

And that's where (opens can of worms) lapping comes to the rescue  I'll just shamelessly quote myself from the thread where lapping came to the rescue last time. ;) It is funny how the first result when you google "CPU lapping" is this article . The article is great when it comes to detail …
