windows has a builtin ftp server? to my knowledge from version 7 or so, only as an option, not the default

for games with almost unrealistic conventional memory needs, wouldnt you just go for os/2? someone here posted a vid about it and allegedly some Warp version could get more than 640K for your dos program, or was that just b/s?

i was rather aiming at trying to check if cds get read faster on a second controller with windows 2k; quite frankly i think adaptec software in win2k sucks;

and you have good harddisk performance on that controller? 😮 i dont know how reproducible those results are, but overall win2k does better, just gets choked down more often than on windows 9 which results in lower overall speed, even access time is 20% worse;

the estimation routine in windows is more than just buggy imho, it belongs into a straitjacket; did it really take twice the time? frankly with such a difference id rather think the driver is buggy/weirdly featured; any way you could see if this happens for standard ide/any additional controller …

pure curiosity? could you provide numbers for this? for example copying a big file? personally i always thought win98 would handle media a little bit faster than nt, since only nt leaves some margin in order to avoid the whole system to lag during large operations?

interesting imho pulling off of lan over a fast NIC will usually yield a lower load than reading from HD (maybe except for scsi) it is my experience with dvd burning, that disks were destroyed mostly because windows does background jobs and will sometimes cause huge reads that would not allow …

and do You use sata/pata or scsi devices for that? the problem where high load on the cpu will destroy the medium still exists?

5MBps is the minimal reading speed, but writing should be possible with a lower speed, no? not that you would really want to, cos it takes all weekend; also, are there any scsi/sas devices out there? i always thought burning is easier on the system with scsi?

i have no idea; hopefully s/o else can provide any better advice tomorrow; after installing make a copy of the windows folder somewhere - from my experience thats the fastest backup you can have with windows 9x

im not so sure about this; the asus drivers which were linked here before also work with windows98, so what we did should've worked imho;

if i remember correctly i always had a via 4in1 entry for removal.. im not sure the one you have there is the right one; quite frankly i think your windows went bonkers - id go back to a known good copy

go back to the copy of the system we were talking about; if you have none, then uninstall the drivers;
