Did the TH7II and TH7II-RAID use the same BIOS? Presumably the BIOS was actually for the TH7II-RAID and the previous model just ignored the RAID stuff.

Exotic old compression systems are interesting. I recently came across the ECM format for the first time, which compressed CD images by removing error correction data. This seems to provide about 4% compression. I guess that was a big deal in the dialup days.

For something that isn't supposed to be resold there sure are a lot of Intel engineering samples on eBay. I assume Intel gives them out in bulk to OEMs and doesn't ask for them back.

I had success with the freezer trick however, (a) the drive wasn't making any strange noises (b) the drive was detected in BIOS and Windows (c) files and directories could be listed, and errors only occurred when files were opened or copied. If this isn't the case for your drive then freezing …

You should probably be sealing them against water somehow. Shrink wrap maybe. It won't help if the roof comes down but will protect against short term water exposure.

There's a similar issue with using the G550 in Windows NT 4.0. No driver exists although it would have been trivial to produce one.

Dust inside the drive blocking something? Shoot some compressed air in there. You need to avoid knocking the head out of alignment though. That's not fixable.
