Re: Suggestions for lightweight and free antivirus?

in Milliways
I am already well-protected even without antivirus. I have blocked malicious sites and ad sites using hosts file (as well as updating it regularly) Oh, by the way, I'm using Windows XP SP2 32-bit. Many thanks. Have you looked at the browser add-on uBlock Origin? It has the ability to use multiple …

Re: Suggestions for lightweight and free antivirus?

Regarding ClamAV, they were recently tested by av-test.org and did about as poorly as I've ever seen an A/V do. IMO, ClamAV should be limited to a background scanner for linux servers. It doesn't have what it takes (especially on Windows PCs) for a desktop scanner. Another good site to check …

I've never had any issues activating BitDefender free. It is my go-to recommendation for personal use. But if you're having issues with that, MSE is my 2nd choice. Their detection rates have gone up considerably (see av-test.org) in recent times, which was always their Achilles Heel.

Re: POD 200Mhz

The motherboard I'm considering this for has official support for Overdrive processors up to 200Mhz, so I don't anticipate compatibility issues there. I've also read reports of people using a 233MMX and K6-2 with a Powerleap adapter. Here's more info on the motherboard: http://www.uktsupport.co.uk/ …

Re: POD 200Mhz

If you want to save money get a regular P233 MMX, they handle 3.3V just fine as long as you use a heatsink that can handle a K6. You get 33 extra MHz and I even think the motherboard is better off without the hot running little overdrive with its tiny heatsink. Im pretty sure the extra power the …

POD 200Mhz

This seems to be a rare processor? I've had my eye out for one for a couple of months and there is only a single option I could find on ebay (around $48). I intend to use it strictly for experimenting/benchmarking, so I'm not motivated to spend very much money on it. Question: does this price seem …

Re: Wing Commander 4 won't recognize joystick

in Windows
I also have the T.16000, great stick :) Did you try the secret missions? I found them too hard and gave up after a while :blah: The T16000 is on my XP machine, so I haven't used it so far on the WC's (when I finish WC3, I'll have to use it for WC4 and Prophecy). I'm using an old-fashioned Mach I …

Wing Commander 4 won't recognize joystick

in Windows
This is the GOG.com version. It acts as if the joystick is not plugged in at all. Relevant info: Thrustmaster T.16000M Windows XP sees the joystick in Control Panel->Game Controllers and it's fully functional and calibrate-able. The joystick works fine in the other Wing Commanders--both the older …

Re: ScummVM Surprising MIDI Emulation

Yeah, that is the Tandy three voice +noise with ScummVM palying it as piano. Here is how it sounds in DOSBox with Tandy. http://www.sierrahelp.com/Assets/Music/KQ1AGI.mp3 Cool! The sound reminds me a bit of the Apple II Mockingboard (with fewer voices). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2LlicAXhkX4 …

collector wrote: Sounds like you have the AGI version. To hear all three voices an noise channel you have to have Tandy hardware , DOSBox or ScummVM. Otherwise on a real non-Tandy PC all you will have is the PC speaker. Here is how it sounds as played through the Santa Cruz DLS: Filename kq1a.mp3 …

Re: ScummVM Surprising MIDI Emulation

It depends on which version of KQ1 you have. If it is the original You can use Tandy sound for the three voice +noise channel. No patch needed in DOSBox, but you do need to have machine set to tandy. On real hardware you need a real Tandy. ScummVM gets its AGI engine from the old Sarien interpreter …

Re: ScummVM Surprising MIDI Emulation

I think it's relatively easy. ScummVM maps GM compatible sound cards to MT32 instruments. Nothing else. That is why it sounds good. Munt is supported by ScummVM, but you need to have the MT32 ROMs, because these are not part of the basic SCUMMVM installation pack, as far as I know. I don't have any …

Re: ScummVM Surprising MIDI Emulation

The latest ScummVM has the latest MUNT built-in. That might explain it? I thought you were right, but I just checked and ScummVM is set to "Don't use MT-32 music". The only thing "MIDI" enabled is the Santa Cruz DLS Synth (Windows MIDI) is set at the default GM device. The really weird thing is I …

ScummVM Surprising MIDI Emulation

Mods: I wasn't sure the best forum for this. Please move if there's a better place for it. I was playing today with various DOS games played through ScummVM. The platform is Windows XP and the sound card is the Turtle Beach Santa Cruz. When I set ScummVM's default MIDI device to the Santa Cruz DLS, …
