PCI-based cards will work if they have special drivers. But if the card has an OPL3 chip, it's likely to work with minimal effort (maybe an initialization driver) since all it requires is I/O ports and no IRQ or DMA. It's digital sound that messes things up.

Trio 64 is better suited to Pentium I machines. For Pentium II I honestly don't know, maybe something from nVidia? I'm not the right person to ask.. Probably yes, although you might need drivers. Maybe you don't need drivers though, try some DOS games and see if they work! And yes, ATI cards have horrible EGA compatibility. I always stay away from them when I plan to do DOS stuff. You might try a PCI video card.

OK... that CGA card does look like the new-style due to the resistors on it, but looking at pictures of new CGA cards I can't find one with the Motorola chip instead of the other one. Does this mean anything?

If you have a good antivirus and you're smart about what you do on the internet, XP will be just fine. I wouldn't set certain people loose with XP though, seeing what they are capable of doing to 7.

Check the "Hot Keys" settings, and turn them off. I have to do that every single time I reinstall the graphics drivers on many computers (I think for Intel cards).

Now I'm quadruple posting, but please, mods, make an exception for me since I'm so excited 😊 I checked my email, downloaded a large (64MB) file, posted on VOGONS and PCKF, and visited various other sites all on pure DOS on real hardware. It's a good day 😀

Well, now I'm using the Dillo port to DOS, which I've been much more pleased with so far. Renders VOGONS in a much more recognizable fashion, as other sites. And it doesn't constantly renegotiate the DHCP settings. So here's a celebratory emoticon: 😁
