Your best bet might be to try to dig up who they bought out (or at least licensed tech from) to build their first AC97 chips. There's probably some connection to an old obsolete tech company in there somewhere, which would make it okay to use one of that company's sound cards. 😀

Nah it won't damage it. But it the -5V is missing the card sounds clearly faulty. Not sure if that's your issue though, but worth checking. That's good to hear! I just checked the ATX connector and it is missing the -5v pin (the case has a plate that covers the information label on the PSU...). …
