I need to use some usb devices with a pci usb card, that 98 doesn't recognise without wanting drivers, which leaves me with either 2k or me (on a pentium 133, am guessing 2000 would be better for this because me wants a 150). Programs like topbench complain about being in protected mode if I install that unofficial dos 7.1, with with freedos they're fine. Ideally I'd be able to run dos 7.1 in real mode because it comes with a lot of sound card drivers that auto-install, especially pci ones that work under dos.

I always saw the option to go up to this res back in the day and thought "woah" since I'd only ever seen a 1280x1024 monitor. There was a site that listed ram needed, but it only went up to 1280x1024. Would be interesting to know how much vram you needed for something so high at 32 bit colour...

Throttle or similar tools can disable the L1 cache. I used this on an Atom netbook to run Wing Commander at a decent speed :) Throttle only brings up a percentage menu for me, at least on a 440bx chipset. And on your P4? Topbench reports a cpu of 386dx40, when speedsys guesses correctly (1/3rd of cpu speed, which is the proper moslo parameter) but then it crashes with an opcode/divide by zero error. My doom realtics are varying wildly from the equivalent systems on the list, and iirc even with the same cpu with no cache disabled. Topbench reckons the cpu is the same speed though. Could it be my fsb or ram speed/amount/type? The 3dbench was within 15% or so of a "real" system.
