Re: Wolfenstein 3D memory problem

But, on both 7.1 and 6.22 I was using the included HIMEM... Are they different and do they produce a different result? That would be the subject matter of my previous post, yes. :blah: But then, as noted above, Mr. Keropi has the same amount of RAM and has no problems. Are you using the latest …

Re: Wolfenstein 3D memory problem

No, I think a P3 is pretty old at this point. It would be pretty questionable to get Wolfenstein 3D running on anything newer, at least. Back to the matter at hand: how much RAM do you have in this system? Did you try HIMEMX? (Did you miss my post entirely..?) Ah sorry. No, I haven't tried HIMEMX …

Re: Help me choose a video card from a pile

@r00tb33r your best bet is to get UniVBE6.7 and use it's UniRefresh program, it will detect your card's capabilities and will allow you to set refresh rates in DOS for VBE modes (Duke3D, Blood, Quake use them for example). Sounds good, I'll give it a try. I was getting a garbled screen with VBEHz …

Re: Help me choose a video card from a pile

What do you plan on doing with this machine? Most of those cards would be fine for a high end DOS machine but once you get into Windows Games I don't thing any of them will cut it unless your talking about except for maybet he Rendition for RRedline based games. Number one reason I kept this …

Wrong forum. This one is for modern systems. Use Marvin. http://www.vogons.org/viewforum.php?f=60 This forum is for modern systems. For old hardware like yours use Marvin. http://www.vogons.org/viewforum.php?f=60 Just a observation. You seem to have to repeat yourself many times throughout this …

Re: Help me choose a video card from a pile

S3 cards are plentiful, cheap, VERY compatible and well supported because of the numbers they sold. From your pile there is no better DOS vga to use. Have a look here: https://gona.mactar.hu/DOS_TESTS/ That's a... very complete answer. I like that table. Thanks! I haven't done any testing with …

Re: Help me choose a video card from a pile

For P3 system you'd probably want some 3D capable card - Voodoo3 or TNT2. Or maybe one of your cards + Voodoo2. There lies the dilemma. A lot of Windows games from 1998+ either just work with patches on modern hardware and OS, or if used with Glide wrapper run even better than on hardware of the …

Re: need advice about 3d graphics card

Last time I played Glide games was a couple years ago, on Windows 7 with fairly modern hardware (I had GTX 770 for video). If game works with Glide wrapper, use Glide wrapper instead of Voodoo on retro gaming PC, Glide wrapper often enables resolutions higher than original game had with 3Dfx, and …

Re: Video card for fallout3?

I ran it with a GF 9600 GT 512MB back in the day. It was good. The board had PCIe 1.x on nForce4 chipset. (Gigabyte GAK8-NE) I used to sell video cards back in the day. I advise NOT to buy used G80 and G92 (65 and 55nm) cards, 90% of them are doorstops.(G92 cards were pretty much what caused BFG to …

Help me choose a video card from a pile

System: ASUS P3B-F (440BX chipset) + Slot 1 PIII 500MHz (100x5) I should use FASTVID with 440BX, correct? Video cards to choose from: 1. Diamond Stealth 64 (S3 Trio64V+), PCI, 2MB 2. Diamond Stealth II S220 (Rendition V2100), PCI, 4MB 3. ATI 3D Rage "Mach64 GT", PCI, 4MB 4. SiS 6326, AGP, 8MB (might …

keropi wrote: on my system I can play wolf3d just fine with DOS from 98SE (not dos under 98se but boot in dos mode) and I have 128MB installed. No issues whatsoever. Yeah, that's what I was doing, a DOS mode boot (no GUI). Didn't work, don't know why. Weird.

Re: Wolfenstein 3D memory problem

The only difference is the DOS version. So Wolfenstein 3-D is not compatible with the DOS version from Win9x? What? Maybe because Wolfenstein 3D wants to run in real mode and the DOS version under Windows 9x uses protected mode? There's a difference in how memory is accessed. http://www.vogons.org/ …

Re: Help me set up SB32/AWE32 card

Wow! Thanks! Pardon my ignorance, but in practice what's the difference between GM, GS and MT32? So far I've been using SF2 soundfonts with my software MIDI device. Is there a large selection of sbk soundfonts? What's your favorite? I would probably use an SC-55-like soundfont if one is available. …

Help me set up SB32/AWE32 card

I have a CT3600 that I want to use. The chips on the board are as follows: EMU8000 (sampled synth) CT2502 (integrated SB16 "ViBRA") CT1978 (emulates OPL3) EMU8011 (1MB sample ROM) Just so there is no confusion, that's a readout of chips on *MY* board. The end goal for me is getting drivers installed …

Re: Wolfenstein 3D memory problem

Nonsense! I installed MS-DOS 6.22 on another hard drive and set it up the same way. MSD again reports 581KB free conventional memory. Wolfenstein 3-D runs fine however. The only difference is the DOS version. So Wolfenstein 3-D is not compatible with the DOS version from Win9x? What?

Wolfenstein 3D memory problem

Using DOS from Windows 98 (DOS version 7.10) AUTOEXEC.BAT is empty CONFIG.SYS: DOS=HIGH,UMB DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS Nothing else. MSD utility reports I have 581KB conventional memory free. Wolfenstein 3D (version 1.4) should run with about 520KB. When I run WOLF3D.EXE I get a red box with the …
