Well... Besides the baby birds I rescued and raised until they were able to take off (2 of 4 survived) the only beasts in the back yard here are the dogs here is a good picture of the beasts at 5 months old enjoying the snow before we went south. Woof

Do you have any airflow in your case? Its possible the cpu was overheating. I believe Pentium III CPUs have thermal projection (power cut off at certain temps). Is the heatsink good and snug on the cpu? I know people tend to over bend the mounting arm for tualatins resulting in a loose heatsink …

Why not try them both and run some benchmarks for science? :) Most people running the mendocinos would overclock them wildly so I'm not sure how they'll handle stock against a p2 I'd imagine compilers may favor the much larger cache of the pentium ii but games and basic software may favor the much …

70+c in games isn't very good unless the cpu is pegged to 100% load, but no it shouldn't be an issue. a stress test will drive your cpu way out of spec temp.
