VGA is 15 pin and the connector is HD15 and serial is 9 pin and the connector is DB9. HD connectors have 3 rows of pins. DB connectors have 2 rows of pins. They aren't interchangeable. For a splitter, wouldn't you want to look for the opposite, one with 2 male plugs?

Windows 9x was really, really bad about reinstalling drivers automatically when changing hardware. You can generally only get away with it with very minor hardware changes. As previously mentioned.. boot disk (not disc).
