With RAMBUS memory and AGP, your options are quite narrow. That's some Chromatic Mpact2 card.

I play homeworld alot and it seems it needs palletized textures. It doesn't need it, but apparently texture quality may degrade, due to texture format conversion. Usually they can be converted to RGB on the fly without any loss.

I think 486 processors with VLB or PCI bus can benefit from this. From my observations with Quake, there is some benefit.

vbe2 is quite a bit more modern than most doom dedicated pcs That standard was released before The Ultimate Doom (1995).

Personally, I don't like to see a card with worse than 70ns That's pretty much useless for many ISA cards, because memory speed is clocked with ISA bus. I've experimented with Trident 8900D and 100ns memory and it worked just fine even on 20 Mhz ISA bus. Switch to 70ns or 60ns could benefit some …

upgrade memory chips on ISA video card from 80ns to let's say 10ns? Impossible. If memory chips are marked as "10" - that's actually 100ns. Would is make much sense (speedwise) Without card BIOS editing or some utility to change parameters online - no.

Another crazy idea: Modern games use Dynamic resolution scaling That's possible due to deferred rendering and overall long rendering pipeline. That stuff must be heavily buffered.

ESS cards also had software solution to pass ISA DMA via PCI, like some other manufacturers at that time. SB-Link standard was designed to work directly without a driver, just like a real ISA sound card, i.e. no memory managers shenanigans and waste of conventional memory.

The Matrox G550 PCI-E card also works with Windows 98 using the Matrox drivers Huh, it actually works in Win9x environment? If so, that's Riva TNT2 level card (with similar feature set), which may come in handy.

AFAIK 6800 XT from XFX is just custom GeForce 6800LE card with GDDR3 memory. It's still NV40 chip with native AGP bus, so it should work with early drivers, which predates Nvidia cards with PCIe-AGP bridge.
