Seems to me like there are potentially some hardware differences I don't see it. Switching FSB on-the-fly was more often than not an implementation of Turbo button on Socket 3 mobos. Sometimes very specific combination of motherboard, noname chinese adapter and SSD will lead to such thing. Switching to other SSD also can solve this problem.

Compared to other hobbies I find retro hardware affordable, even most vintage and rare items. Eh, depends. IBM PC compatible stuff in general? Sure, it's abundant enough. Commodore Amiga? Probably lost train. Some old Apple stuff? Also lost train.

At the end of the day, there's no documented evidence that these CPUs can work as normal Intel DX4 WB or as any 486.

Per discussion over at CPU World, some of the late 2007 production 486’s had the larger black die cap. Still doesn't explain lack of production information. If anything, it probably should have been printed on die cap in similar to ceramic Pentium MMX fashion.

AFAIK it's much easier to find games which require at least SSE2, because it was adopted by both x86 CPU manufacturers and became de facto standard. Original SSE never had such luxury.

Socket 939 is somewhat expensive already, but partially. Nforce 4 was very brittle and prone to failure, so less working boards remained. Crossover boards (so 478 with PCIe or 775 with AGP) do exist but weren't mainstream. LGA775 AGP with i865 chipset variation is mainstream . Also plethora of VIA based MATX boards. Virge specs say single-cycle EDO RAM, but for a frequency that high, loosed timing is prime suspect indeed. I would suspect that timings on 50 Mhz BIOS are just too tight even for more typically clocked card and not the other way. 35ns EDO was rated to work at 83Mhz by some manufacturers. …
