That experiment does not apply since you're not applying a current when cleaning your PCBs. (Are you? 🤣 ) Destilled water won't save you either when applying current. Edit: I guess you realised that yourself since you removed the post. 😉

The external battery pack often had another voltage than the onboard rechargeable battery. If 3.6V doesn't do the trick the PCB is likely designed for a 4.6V external battery.

Best thing to use is use only distilled water if you are going to use water, because tap water has dissolved solids and minerals and other kinds of nasty junk in it. I don't think regular tap water is bad for cleaning PCBs. I always use simple tap water with a bit of dish soap. Efficient and …

I don't know that capacitors values but the easiest way to replace it should be to desolder one from another Duron or Athlon. Old Durons cost next to nothing so it's a no-brainer.

For a single V2 it shouldn't really matter which of those CPUs you use. Still I would pick the Celeron since the platform is more upgradeable.

What the motherboard can cache and what the on-die cache on the CPU can handle are completely independent of each other. I believe the G-stepping of the chipset works fine with K6plus as well, it's only one particular motherboard (ASUS P5A rev. 1.05/06) which is screwed up. Have a look at all tantalum caps as well while you're at it. Those tend to short out when they get old and that will often produce the same error.
