Getting two CD drives to talk to each other

Sorry for sounding dumb but whenever I have more than one drive (For ex. CD and DVD) on the same IDE chain only one of them works- I've tried CSEL, One master one slave, etc. etc. however I can only ever get one to work, or be detected at all.

Well, some progress was made but due to side of an IDE port being damaged and scratching the mobo in a bad place both IDE ports kerplunkled. + the mobo I was using was a Gateway OEM mobo. I now use a Cyrix 6x86MX custom PC with XP for all my retro gaming needs.

1. Yes 2. Yes 3. No, because I lack writable floppies. 4. None. 5. Nope. Also, this PC did boot from HDD when the CD drive wasn't plugged in at all, and the same problem continues to occur if the CD drive is primary master and the HDD is secondary.

I dont know the mobo model- Its got bog standard ALI chips in there from '98 but i doubt that will help. Do you think Windows ME could solve these because it might have drivers for the Rage 128 prepackaged. Also the sound card works fine.

Apologies I made a mistake in the title- Its an MII-333 not a 6x86. Also I have no mobos new enough to test the ATI card. I got 1 from '92 and one from '95.
