I know 7 runs way better on 1GB than Vista does, but you still want another half to 1 if you want to do anything much.

I can't see how you either disabled all RAM above 640k or only installed 640k in the 586 so there was no conflict with existing memory. Edit: I'm also thinking XT side, that back in the day I never managed to get an expanded memory card working in a machine that didn't have a full 640.

So have you done a CMOS reset with the VLB in or not? Also do you have a mono/color jumper? in case this board cares more than the ISA

Get your board supported well at all points underneath, like at the edge of a table or something so there's room for the backplate bracket drop. Then really mash it in, alllll the way down, bury it in the VLB connector right to the PCB.

Isn't the 360/720 thing mostly a DOS version issue??? I stuck a 720 in an IBM XT no problems back in the day, was using DR DOS 6 at the time. I thought it was MS DOS 3 or below that couldn't even 720.

Well you could "do everything" a normal user would want to do up until 96 or so with 8MB but 16MB is nicer in windows 3.11 or 95 if you have thoughts of putting that on. 4MB wasn't that limiting until 95ish I don't think.
