Doom is a game that will barf when MIDI IN cable is connected, maybe that was the problem.

Creative had many manufacturers make the chips for them. That particular mixer chip probably was made by ST, it is the only french manfacturer I know of.

The problem is most probably dried up capacitors, there are a bunch of 1µF ones that don't take much to degrade beyond usefulness compared to a 10µF one.

WDM drivers business only applies to physical CD drives, emulation software can simply open a WaveOut stream and play the data as if you started a music file on the computer.

1A is about max for a pin in the connector, and seems cable itself is less capable. There will be some level of heating, depending on (contact) resistance but in general it isn't gonna be a problem unless you try to do something overkill 🤣.

In theory they are generic 8041/8042 type MCUs with mask ROM and any programmable variation should be workable.

The MIDI emulation TSR is only supposed to work properly with real-mode games, any protected mode games are probably not going to work unless they have native AWE support.

Dust gets under the lens and on the mirrors in the laser assembly. Some air compressor method is probably necessary to get the dust out from inside the assembly or at least get disturbed enough that readback becomes possible. Sometimes the lasers have simply burned out...
