I have found a manual of that game and says that there is a command line switch called VESA. Try it to see if it solves the problem on the S3 video hardware.

Probably the SVGA video mode is a non-standard one which predates VESA. Does the game support a VESA video mode? LineWars II has a similar thing where there is a accelerated S3 video mode that uses 800x600 but that only works on cards prior to Trio64 and this one checks if that mode exist or not.

Isn't the ASCII character thing related to the 8x14 font issue that happens on other games where the font is just garbage on some video cards? I'm not familiar with that game though.

Configure a HDD with nonsensical sizes such as m471. This actually happened to me when cajoling a 64GB HDD to work on a BIOS which supports up to 8GB and surprisingly worked, I used the correct settings from another motherboard which detected it without issues.

8088MPH doesn't use EGA or VGA graphics card. It uses a real CGA in ways that people believed it was not possible on a IBM PC.

Had a similar issue with Gex but only with the intro cinematic when using a S3 ViRGE/GX video card where only the top half of the screen was visible unless I toggle the fullscreen mode. The same intro works without any issues with a on S3 Trio64V+. It depends of the video card and/or driver.

There was a topic here related to this 3 years ago. For practical purposes it is not necessary and you are not really missing anything, the PC platform hardly used this feature due to inconsistencies around the graphics hardware.
