Re: Where to Start?

in DOS
Reading the FAQs section and Guidelines would be a good idea too. Does not my explanation of my ahrdware at the top of the thread indicate to you that perhaps I did? In fact, the implication in the guidelaines that of course I must be running some kind of emulator was also part of what led …

Re: Where to Start?

in DOS
Thanks. Before seeing your reply, I went ahead and got it working with dosbox (and d-fend). It could still use some tweaks, but it's working.

Re: Where to Start?

in DOS
A search for "Fantasy General" yields 747 hits. None of them excpet this thread actually are about how to run that game. I've gotten the feeling from lloking around that dosbox is now the genreally preferred method for all games, but is that really true? Should I be looking at VDMS instead? Or …

Re: Where to Start?

in DOS
It's a Presario X1000 with a Pentium M 1300MHz. At least Device Manager says it's a Pentium M; the physical label attached to the machine, as well as the occasional box I've seen pop up, says it's got Centrino technology. Isn't that an alternative to the Pentium? Maybe not. I bought the thing used …

Where to Start?

in DOS
Is this the right place to ask which utilites (like dosbox) if any I should be using? I'm trying to get fantasy General to run on my laptop. I was here a few years ago with questions about a few games, but I don't remember the answers and they likely don't apply to my new situation and the new …

Re: "Cannot locate CD" trying to run Master of Orion with Dosbox

in DOS
Finsterr (Ulf Wohlers) on the sourceforge board says "CD volume labels are not supported in 0.58. I added support for it in current cvs. You may try it or wait for the next version." I'm confused, because I think others have the game working, but maybe they have different versions of the game. So I …

Re: "Cannot locate CD" trying to run Master of Orion with Dosbox

in DOS
Thanks. I had been looking at the 0.56 readme, which didin't list cdrom as value for -t. I'm now both running and reading the readme of 0.58. So I "mount d d:\ -t cdrom -ioctl" just fine. (I get the same results without the -ioctl.) And I can switch to the D drive and do a dir. Buit from any other …

"Cannot locate CD" trying to run Master of Orion with Dosbox

in DOS
I can tell dosbox to "mount d d:\", so dosbox itself sees the drive, but the game deosn't see it and quits immediately with that message. I had the same problem with the CD version of Master of Magic (developed by the same people) a while ago, as you can see from the 8th post in this thread. That ( …

Re: Master of Magic and dosbox help?

in DOS
Where there are differences between the download version and the CD version, the downloads files are actually newer. My advice is to just forget about the CD version. As for getting it to work without dosbox, I think I've had enough tinkering for a while. There seem to be enough folks on the Classig …

Re: Master of Magic and dosbox help?

in DOS
I'll do a compare of the last-modified dates of the two sets of files later this weekend and let you know what I find. BTW, after I finally got it working, I found this thread of folks who got it working w/o dosbox http://www.classicgaming.com/mom/board/topic.asp?topic_id=55134&forum_id=3276&Topic_ …

Re: Master of Magic and dosbox help?

in DOS
Thank you. The downloaded version is much more friendly. The installer runs in XP (though I see what you mean that it doesn't do anything) and the game runs in dosbox. The CD version, which I bought on Ebay is obsolete, I guess. Anyway thanks Qbix and Snover for getting me going.

Re: Master of Magic and dosbox help?

in DOS
But this is really a side issue. If I recall correctly, all the Microprose installer does is copy files. I've copied them manually. The game still won't run because it can't find the CD. (Go up 6 posts). Dosbox has the CD in drive D, but the game running under dosbox doesn't. Unless we can get the …

Re: Master of Magic and dosbox help?

in DOS
I hadn't tried that. Didn't know about it. But it doesn't work. Alt-Enter momentarily starts to create a window. Then it kicks me temporarily out of the cmd/installer application altogether. When I go back to the cmd/application 'window' it is still the same stuck full screen.

Re: Master of Magic and dosbox help?

in DOS
Within XP the installer already comes up full screen. But no controls work. No mouse, no keyboard. So I guess the mouse freeze is just a symptom. Sorry I didn't realize that earlier. The keyboard does work to Ctl-Escape or Alt-Tab out of the cmd window. It's only in the cmd/installer that I'm …

Maybe only the disk version works.

in DOS
I tried runing the game without going through the install process. I had already copied the whole CD to directory on my hard drive, so I ran magic.com from that directory. I had already mouted the CD as D in dosbox. But when I ran magic, I got the message File-> findcd.c, Line-> 56 Could not locate …

Re: Master of Magic and dosbox help?

in DOS
That aspect ratio, BTW is not 4:3. It's almost 4:1. I don't have that problem before I start the install program. It's something about the interaction of dosbox with the program.
