I have some IBM from 8088 to Pentium4, the quality drop constantly from 486 to pentium to pentium II/III and the Pentium4 IBM is the only one i have that have lakead caps... not buy an IBM if you aren't collector like me

I have recently developed my "retro" machines but I chose SCSI controller and 15,000rpm SCSI hard disk. If you want to be more "retro" than using SSDs I think there is nothing that can come close to 15k scsi disks.

not really, sometimes i find a good price on ebay for specifich item. example: 3x 15k scsi drive (two are 68pin!) at 36€ shippied in my country (coming also from my country)

In my Amiga 1200 i can go from a 14Mhz 68020 to a 300Mhz of the Powerpc 603. Can probably the most wide increase in performance.

So wait, it starts in CRT mode and then after bios initialization switches to LCD timings screwing VGA output? Also weird that it remembers without CMOS battery. Swapping the hard drive, with so many trick because the screw-hole are different from the early hard disk to the more modern one.

I took the computer that I left without being touched for a few days, I physically disconnected what I believe are the cables that go to the integrated LCD, connected the external monitor and immediately the bios appeared. Since its a very old LCD it might actually run at weird refresh. Old laptops had a switch selecting between external display and LCD and you couldnt use both at the same time. There is no physical switch nor the classic "F6" type key which together with the "fn" key enables particular functions …

The 'out of range' message is likely being generated by the external monitor ~ by the sound of it, the video output is behaving badly and my guess is that's also impacting the builtin display as well. What's the exact model of the machine? but 4/5 times I was able to see the bios on the external …
