Re: 3 (+3 more) retro battle stations

Realized that not all crystal oscillators work on all 386 motherboards. This is especially true for those 100/110/120 MHz oscillators. So, i had to go back and recheck all boards that could overclock to 50 or more MHz FSB. Luckily they are not that many and only 2 of them had to be retested. As a …

Re: 486 board with UMC 8881E/8886B: The winner is: EDO without L2 (terms and conditions apply)

To mkarcher's note about not limiting RAM. Present L2 cache with 2-1-1-1 timings is always faster than L2 cache disabled. FPM can cope with this at up to 4x40MHz, or 3x50MHz. After that 50ns EDO modules are needed. For reference, UUD motherboard, Am5x86, 3x60MHz, L2 cache 2-1-1-1, 64Mb EDO 1/0WS, …

Re: 3 (+3 more) retro battle stations

Until now this post outlined the highest performance watermark for 386 class hardware, but nothing lasts forever. MSI MS-3124 version 2.1 based on Contaq 82C591 A, 82C592 The fastest 386 motherboard ... to date. https://www.petershipkov.com/temp/retro_pc_images/components_lo/motherboard_386_msi-3124 …

Re: 3 (+3 more) retro battle stations

Nice. Some of the results seems to be contradicting each other. For example: 18 fps in Quake 1 suggests well optimized system, but the 3DS test suggests otherwise. Both of them lean heavily on the FPU. Wonder if a different VGA BIOS will help the DOS pixel pushing (Wolf3D, Doom) ? You probably saw …
