Low-level netw. support effectively loads the IPX stack. You may need to configure IPX on your ethernet adapter. Also see "IPX" in the index of Windows Help. V.

XP is fucked up re. the environment vars, that's why on XP VDMSPath and PATH will look updated in Control Panel when in fact they are not in effect and a reboot may be required. Breaking regular apps in system32 (ping etc.) is weird. Is C:\Win....\SYSTEM32 still in the path when doing "set" or "path …

Yes, correct - unless you use LaunchPad that is, in which case VDMS.INI is ignored and custom ones are generated as needed.

I'm all confused. Even in the latest VDMSound EMUPPDAC is optional and only loads if you tell it to. I sthis what you did, i.e. added the EMUPPDAC lines in the custom congfig section etc.? Beyond that, it's all timer fun. AdLib has internal counters that may be used to regulate AdLib music …

Hmm, I dunno, intelligent MIDI and dumb UART MIDI are pretty separate, and the only thing that happened is where before you would have had error messages and no sound you now have fewer error messages. 😀 Maybe the explanation is different. When is the last time (version of VDMSound) MIDI worked?

Yes that's how MT-32 savvy games make custom sounds, by mixing PCM samples and/or synthetic waveforms (I mean the sawtooth & square.)

It's Windows' sucky timer emulation. SPEEDSET may have worked ecxept... it doesn't work in protected mode and Descent is IIRC a protected-mode game. Somebody please make SPEEDSET p-mode friendly! 😀 V.

You must nable low-level CD-ROM support in VDMSound. You either do that in the LaunchPad properties if using VDMSound LaunchPad or inside VDMS.INI otherwise. Don't mix the two please. V.

Min and max DMA period defines how often VDMSound will look for new audio data and send it to direct-sound (in milliseconds.) It will self-adjust between the min/max bounds depending on how frequently the game pumps out sound data (small sound buffers, circular, will overwrite themselves more …

Nonono, the monitor shutoff should be OK; it's the computer suspend, if you have it enabled, that you should disable since some (PCI) cards have trouble resuming from suspend. V.
