I don't think faster video RAM will solve your issue. Faster video RAM can remove flicker artifacts at high resolution / refresh rate, and faster video RAM can avoid corrupted images. Little update here; it was either the PSU or the motherboard that caused the overheating. Switched to another PC and it works just fine.

Pretty much as the title suggests, I bought an MPU-401 breakout box but I don't have an interface card for it. Will it work if I hook it up to the MIDI UART port of a sound card? I also have a MT-32 module. I know I can connect this directly to a sound card, but want to test the MPU-401.

All of the three buffer/driver chips seem to be connected to the 8 ISA data bits. If they get hot, it looks like they fight each other driving data to the ISA bus. I will try in another board/PSU to eliminate one possible issue; over voltage on the ISA bus (however I have a VGA and a I/O controller running on the same board which don't seem to have any issues)
