OS/2 1.x could handle about 512MB of RAM, if memory serves. Physical, or virtual? I suspect virtual... 286 protected mode = 14-bit segment + 16-bit offset = 30 bits = 1 GB Half for system, half for application seems logical... For more than 16 MB of physical, however, it would have to be 386-aware …

There were DOS compatible, i386-based multi-user operating systems like real/32 or PC-MOS/386. They weren't using much 32-Bit code yet, but that wasn't needed at the time. 32-bit was needed, and BADLY. The best proof is that there was so many 32-bit extenders: DOS4GW, PMODE, GO32, EMX, Phar Lap... …

There are different versions of Pinball Fantasies. Most notably, GOG sells "Pinball Fantasies Deluxe". IIRC something in Pinball Fantasies Deluxe uses a DOS externder that crashes if too much memory (EMS or XMS) is available, whereas classic Pinball Fantasies is a plain real mode application. …

It should work, but it also depends of software. The FM synth (OPL2) is known for heavy distortions on fast CPUs if the software doesn't add proper delays. Slot 1 CPUs are definitely fast enough for this problem to occur.

I think TEST-SBC uses some undocumented DSP commands, which makes it fail on non-Creative cards. Does the Windows 3.1 driver for SB 2.0 work with your card? If not, the problem may be the same - try using the SB driver shipped with Windows instead.

Serial (RS232) port uses +12 and -12 Volt. PS/2 port uses 0 and +5 Volt. Never connect a PS/2 mouse to serial port unless you're 100% sure it's designed for the higher voltage.

I have some vague memory of QEMM providing 635 KB of free conventional, but I'm not 100% sure... You can try it, if you believe that such marginal increase may be helpful.

OS/2 VDM allows for 704 or 736 KB of conventional memory, but it limits available video modes to MDA or CGA. Xargon seems to use VGA mode 13h, where the video memory is located at A0000h = 640 K...
