There were two approaches to the 640x400 resolution: - use a regular CGA monitor (15 kHz HSYNC) with interlace, eg. Tecmar Graphics Master - use a dedicated monitor (most likely 31 kHz HSYNC), eg. DEC VAXmate

ZSoft PC Paintbrush from 1985 lists some more 640x400 monochrome modes: AT&T 6300 High Res Corona Computer Persyst BOB Board Tecmar Graphics Master (but there's also the 16-color mode)

Trident 8900/9000 chips ARE good in CGA/Hercules compatibility, and I don't think there are any differences between revisions in this matter. The bad press about Tridents is due to: - slow video memory access in 9000 and most 8900 variants, only the 8900D is fast - no more than 256 colors in 9000 …

The original PCI is 5 V only. The 3.3 V option was added later, and 32-bit 3.3 V slots are rare. 64-bit PCI-X slots are 3.3 V. And there's plenty of 5 V compatible SATA cards that can be installed even in a 486, but won't work stable due to the lack of MSI.

So I wanted to know what's the performance gain of 16-bit external bus in Turbo XT CPUs: 8088 vs. 8086, V20 vs. V30... V20 @ 10 MHz results are here V30 @ 10 MHz results are there - Juko Nest N3 XT system w/NEC V30 Acquisition/Build Conclusion: 16-bit bus makes it about 50..60% faster.

I've also heard such legends, but nothing specific... Probably the most important limitation of early PCI is the lack of MSI interrupts, a feature required by eg. many SATA controllers... but it got introduced with PCI 2.2 (1998), so even Socket 7 and Slot 1 boards are affected.

It's an 8-bit card, so quantization noise is guaranteed 😜 But OK, if the goal is just to play games with FM music and 8-bit samples, then SB Pro 2 is a good choice indeed.

The only ISA Trident with good performance is 8900D. The C variant is average at best. But it should be noted that Oaks and early WD/Paradise chips aren't fast, either. I don't know about Headland and Chips.
