Re: Keep GeForce 4 to cards from dying

Cheapest? I checked the mainboard-sized ESD bags and it costs a lot ($10/10pcs + shipping, (35x40 cm)). I buy 3 boards for $10 so it's not really worth it for me. Right now they are in cardboard boxes separated by sheets of paper. It's free, I get them in shoe stores. I just tested 16 pcs of 775 …

Re: Keep GeForce 4 to cards from dying

well I felt and saw it happen in real time with my own eyes, idk what more I can tell you not sure if I need lab equipment for that, if you don't believe that go ahead :p I haven't seen it ever and I handle a lot of stuff. But as I mentioned before, I'm only 90% against all that craze that …

Re: Keep GeForce 4 to cards from dying

Agreed. I'm not 100% against ESD protection, just like 90% against it. :D I simply don't believe that handling a component will damage it in any way and cause it to fail one by one like it happened to OP. I handle mine without any protection because I don't want to make an expensive thing even more …

Re: Keep GeForce 4 to cards from dying

Not much info there, just a spark going places. Was the hardware under power or not? It just proves that under certain circumstances a device can be killed by ESD when it's not in the protective bag. It doesn't prove that ESD is common or that it can kill a hardware "much later" or that it can …

Re: Keep GeForce 4 to cards from dying

I also "discharge myself" sometimes but my point stands. A single bag is useless when it's off the hardware and there is nothing that discharges your body. That current has to go somewhere and that will be the hardware you touch if there is no efficient grounding present. The ESD bag is like an RCD …

Re: Keep GeForce 4 to cards from dying

So ESD is the secret force that can be blamed when something goes bad without an immediately visible reason. Or it's just taken waaaaay too seriously and it's not a real threat with all the chip protections in place since the 1980's. Again, it's all useless unless it's 100% efficient (like in big …

Re: Keep GeForce 4 to cards from dying

Not ESD, CES. Common Ebay Scam. Those cards were all dead way before you bought them, maybe "repaired" in an oven so they work for another month. When the seller has tested and untested stuff it always means that the "untested" ones didn't work for him. Untested means that he knows that it's shit …
