Re: Help regarding BIOS 7.4 release for MSI 815EPTPro board in order to support Tualatin 1.4Ghz 512k

Hello everyone, Continuing the Tualatin build I'm making with this MSI 815EPTPro board, I saw in this link that I needed to update the BIOS to version 7.4 in order to support the 1.4Ghz 512k CPU: https://www.cpu-upgrade.com/mb-MSI/815EPT_Pro_(MS-6337).html "2019-06-29 00:41:50 Posted by: VENOM I …

Re: Most powerful ATI / Geforce GPUs possible for a Win 98SE Tualatin gaming build - socket 370, AGP 2x/4x

Socket A coolers are great for Tualatins. I have this Arctic Cooling Copper Silent 3 socket A cooler.20200829_233238.jpg Or some other socket A cooler, but make sure the metal mounting clip has three mounting holes Great news, that I can get easily. I can't tell you how much help I've had from …

Re: Most powerful ATI / Geforce GPUs possible for a Win 98SE Tualatin gaming build - socket 370, AGP 2x/4x

Thanks everyone for all your help, I'll settle for the FX 5600 Extreme my friend will give me. It's an MSI like my board, I like that too. I'm just missing the Tualatin compatible cooler/heatsink and I'm all set. Or if you know of coolers from other sockets that can be adaptable for this I'm all …

Re: Most powerful ATI / Geforce GPUs possible for a Win 98SE Tualatin gaming build - socket 370, AGP 2x/4x

Paired with a 1+ GHz CPU, a GeForce4 ti4200 can run almost any Win9x game (up to the year 2001) in 1280x1024 @60+ FPS. But, if you also want to max out AA and AF and/or play at 1600x1200, you might want to go for the FX5900. Personally, I prefer to play Win9x games at lower resolutions on a CRT as …

Re: Most powerful ATI / Geforce GPUs possible for a Win 98SE Tualatin gaming build - socket 370, AGP 2x/4x

I’ll second that a GF4 MX440 is a decent choice for a Win 98 Tualatin build, as long as it’s the 128-bit memory interface version. There are gimped 64-bit OEM versions that are slow. A Ti 4200 is even better, and can be found pretty easily for $25 if you know what to look for. Even if you don’t use …

Re: Most powerful ATI / Geforce GPUs possible for a Win 98SE Tualatin gaming build - socket 370, AGP 2x/4x

I feel the GPU choice for such a system is a bit difficult. The Tualatin is the killer Win98 processor, but unless you're planning to really crank up games' resolutions, even a matching (let alone fastest supported) GPU is wasted on such a system. Cards like the 6800 were made to play Doom 3, Half- …

Re: Most powerful ATI / Geforce GPUs possible for a Win 98SE Tualatin gaming build - socket 370, AGP 2x/4x

I don't have much experience as you probably realised, so would you recommend a GeForce 4 Ti variant over an FX5900 for example? I have a GeForce 4 MX440, but Vogons thaught me that the MX line it's not the same as the other Geforce 4 ones I'm looking for the best possible performance to respect …

Re: Most powerful ATI / Geforce GPUs possible for a Win 98SE Tualatin gaming build - socket 370, AGP 2x/4x

I always put a rice grain sized drop of thermal paste in the center of the cpu, and place the cooler on top, which will spread it out. As far as video cards, if you're not dead set on having the ultimate possible hardware just for the sake of having it, a Gf4 mx is a decent card for windows 98 …

Re: Most powerful ATI / Geforce GPUs possible for a Win 98SE Tualatin gaming build - socket 370, AGP 2x/4x

If you are benchmarking in windows 98, the geforce 4 cards tend to perform best because of the driver overhead of later cards. This is true even if you are using a faster CPU. I don't have much experience as you probably realised, so would you recommend a GeForce 4 Ti variant over an FX5900 for …

Re: Most powerful ATI / Geforce GPUs possible for a Win 98SE Tualatin gaming build - socket 370, AGP 2x/4x

MSI 815 EPT Pro has universal AGP, it should be voltage compatible with any AGP card. Regarding the board, a few questions please: I saw that I need to update the BIOS to version 7.4 to support the Tualatin 1400mhz 512k. I never updated a BIOS before. Is that the same procedure for all boards of …
