Have you tried testing the RAM with MemTest86 with the P3 600 present? Couldn't hurt to rule it out. I also have an P2B system with a P3 600 MHz and 512 MB RAM. My CPU does not use a fan either.

I ended up using a Transcend TS2GCF133 2 GB card. On my first attempt DOS 6.22 installed, but would not boot. I then used a 98SE boot disk, wiped the partition and then did an fdisk /mbr. Installed DOS again (this time letting it configure the 'hard disk' itself) and now no problems booting.

Good idea on cleaning the heads. I think I will make that a small project to go through and clean all of my 3.5 drives. I only needed this batch of disks for installing DOS on a CF card. After that I doubt I'll have any need for floppies on this particular system.

Just as a follow up in case anyone has the same monitor in the future: I replaced the NVIDIA TNT2 M64 and replaced it with a HIS ATI RADEON 7500 R7S-23 card. Made a night and day difference. It seems the Radeon is doing proper integer scaling (or the monitor is playing nicer with it).
