CRT monitor practices

I have CRT monitor, a ViewSonic 15GA, and I was wondering the best practices to use for longevity. I had to give it 5 degrees or so on the brightness slider to make it usable, as the tube is fairly worn out. I don't usually leave it on, but as a result it power cycles a fair bit. Does turning it off …

Re: ASUS p55t2p4 repair

I don't think EDO ram that's too big can destroy a chipset. If you have beep codes, then the chipset is probably still working. Maybe you could get a POST card first to check on which step your BIOS is stuck, maybe your problem isn't related, or maybe you damaged something else in the process (the …

Re: ASUS p55t2p4 repair

Take a very close look at the memory slots, I got the "infinite beep loop" once on a motherboard despite the modules being known working ones and compatible. The problem was that the contacts in the SIMM slots were mangled and were likely shorting something there. Replacing the slot fixed the issue …

Re: Retro confessions. What are yours?

in Milliways
I killed a perfectly working mint condition p55t2p4 board with an AMD k6-3+, socketed DS cmos chip, and the modified bios to allow for bigger harddrives. Also had a 64mb PCI mx400 in that system. Sad to see it go.

Re: Help with Windows ME (I know) sound setup

Doubled checked it. IRQs are 10 and 5. Set in game, and it still doesn't work. I'll likely blame this one on winME dos compatibility and switch to 98 again. Prior switching back to Windows 98. Did you swap the IRQs? Did you also test this on DOS mode? IRQ 10 and higher isn't very compatible with …

Re: Help with Windows ME (I know) sound setup

I'm pretty sure that's already set as I've messed with IRQs through software before. The address is 220 for music, and works at that address. That's the same address used by games for sound effects as well, yet it still does not work. Make sure that the IRQ is 7 or 5 and DMA is set to 1. Note that …

Re: Help with Windows ME (I know) sound setup

I should have clarified. I am running the win95 driver for this card, that is the driver I manually installed, and it is from the archive you linked. Soundblaster music works, the sound effects do not. Also the card ID is i38-msn811. So, nova 16 extra. Slight identification mishap. Did you check …

Re: Help with Windows ME (I know) sound setup

Would a VXD driver be included in the Aztech driver or is that something else? I'm fairly new to playing around with drivers, have mainly just messed with hardware. At least on Windows 95 and 98 it is included by default. On VOGONS driver library there's a list of drivers related to Aztech sound …

ASUS p55t2p4 repair

Like the absolute genius I am, I decided to ignore the motherboard manual's warnings about specific types of EDO memory and put in a stick of 128mb dual chip EDO memory in it. Doesn't take much to guess what happened next. In short, i'm looking for a replacement 82439hx chip for my board, because in …

Re: Help with Windows ME (I know) sound setup

The only reason why I don't run Windows ME is because the DOS mode is inferior compared to the previous iterations of Windows 9x (the DOS mode patch is a hack from the Windows ME boot disk, cannot use multi-config, unable to unload the XMS driver, etc.). Much of the improvement around booting was …

Help with Windows ME (I know) sound setup

I was messing around with some programs and 9x and it was not playing nice, so I opted to upgrade to ME. The program I was messing with played a bit nicer but still didn't work. Why am I still running ME? Well, to my amazement, it runs a HELL of a lot better than 98. It boots about four times as …
