Watch out for the earliest Asus P4P800 (non deluxe) variants though. They may be susceptible to ESD problems. Link: 'Floating' ports can sink the ship - USB shield grounding

Try a vanilla Windows ME install to isolate your issue. It has 1394 OHCI support out of the box.
