Mine had this battery on the board. Its a lithium thionyl chloride battery, non rechargable. But not leaky either after 35 years. I dont see a diode to prevent charging a non rechargable, perhaps the connection points are different.

Update: replaced the caps the short circuit is gone the drive now spins up like jet engine …. And then it makes a very bad noise. Click whirr, click whirr, Over and over. My guess is a mechanical problem - might even be stiff due to solidified grease. Do you think a few drops of oil will cure it … …

Do you have an m2 ssd ? My gigabyte A320 was a bit limited by pci express lanes . Possibly try booting a usb without the ssd present ?

What about Space-Star-Ordering? Its a reltively new technique I’ve been applying. Using a combination of wishy thinking and finacial leverage. Heres how it works: My hardware is broken - I wish for it to be fixed, then I go on ebay and pay through the nose, and then it is fixed. SpaceStarOrdering.

Bravo ! I think this is very close, at least it looks like I ordered the right capacitance values … You may be right about the rework / bodge theory because I have a second drive ST-4026 that was manufactured slightly later in the year - the circuit board on that is quite a different layout.

The 2 caps in parallel add, so 0.1uF + 100 pF would give 100.1 nF , So the 100pF doesnt add much I think it is some sort of high frequency MHz filter it connects to a pin on the big IC . Ill replace with similar looking ceramic and report back.

Recapping sounds like alot of work. I’ll just wait for the blue varta battery to do its magic. What is the general consesus on replacement caps - electrolytic ceramic or tantalum?

Brilliant. The chip says 286-6, but the oscillator crystal says 16mhz, so its overclocked to a massive 8mhz. And with 512 kb of memory, 20mb hard disk….. Do you think it was more useful as a nest for wasps?
