Re: Simplest way to get Gameport -> MIDI out

Your worries are wise. Use an opto-coupler/opto-insulator on the reception side (Pi+MT-32 hat). There already is one on the pi hat and as I understand it, you don't put those on the outputs, only inputs. I also checked the schematic of my JV-1080 and it too has an opto-coupler on the MIDI IN as I …

Simplest way to get Gameport -> MIDI out

Looking for the simplest way to connect a Sound Blaster to a Raspberry pi with a MT-32 hat . What I understand is there are basically two ways, 1) use a buffer and two resistors and 2) just use resistors and skip the buffer entirely. So just to confirm everything is okay, this schematic is correct, …

Re: Quick question about AWE64 and external midi

Ah, now I understand. You want to know if AWEUTIL provides an intelligent MPU-401, as in MT-32 emulation, but for the physical MIDI connector? Yes, exactly. Or if SoftMPU would work just like on a normal SB16 so I can hook it up to a real MT-32 or a SC-55 or anything connected to the gameport/MIDI …

Quick question about AWE64 and external midi

I'm about to pull the trigger on a AWE64 Value but one thing is rather confusing about AWEUTIL - can I use my MT-32/General Midi with an AWE64? I get the impression that you have to use AWEUTIL to get music at all and that you have to use the 'emulator' function which, somehow gets you MT-32 sound …

Re: 15 FPS Doom 2 with Pentium MMX 200

in DOS
Thanks for all the answers and suggestions, it would seem that I need a PCI card to get most out of the Doom games, and I say that because now I have tested some other games. Rise of the Triad runs almost as bad as Doom 2, about the same as Doom but Heretic runs absolutely flawlessly, no stuttering …

Re: 15 FPS Doom 2 with Pentium MMX 200

Your system is likely too bottlenecked by the ISA graphics card already. I get that it's bottlenecked for what the computer can ultimately do. But why is it slower than a 486 33SX playing Doom 2? I didn't have a PCI card in my 486 in '94, it was a Cirrus Logic 542X something-ISA and I didn't get …

Re: 15 FPS Doom 2 with Pentium MMX 200

Also, looking at that Speedsys screenshot, you seem to have 128MB RAM installed. This could also contribute to the slowdown since the Intel 430TX chipset can only cache 64MB. Uncached RAM is much slower and can reduce overall system performance. I think I have a 32MB laying around, I'll test that …

Re: 15 FPS Doom 2 with Pentium MMX 200

Trident TVGA9000i this is your fault! Get any PCI card, like any generic S3 Trio64 for 5€ it will be miles better ;) The reason I got the Trident card is that I wanted to try out the VGATV since my only VGA CRT is a rather shitty 17" to instead run it on my Sony 21" CRT TV via SCART RGB. There's a …

15 FPS Doom 2 with Pentium MMX 200

in DOS
Finally got around to test my Pentium MMX 200 out and was absolutely floored when I saw how poor the performance of Doom 2 was. With only a graphics card installed on a new 6.22, no other software, no TSR's, no mouse, no sound, nothing other than a raw, basic system, I get maybe 10-15 FPS . Granted, …
