Re: Which voodoo card plus mainboard plus cpu to pick for best backword compability for 1996-1998 gaming

A Pentium II 350 + Voodoo 2 would make a solid gaming setup for that time period. You may run into some compatibility issues with early 3Dfx games (IIRC, Interstate '76 is such a game). Another option would be to use something a nVidia TNT + Voodoo 1 card. The former can support Direct3D and OpenGL …

Re: Which voodoo card plus mainboard plus cpu to pick for best backword compability for 1996-1998 gaming

@all Thanks for the help. In windows there is no difference in compatibility between cards. If it supports glide it supports glide. You likely want a decent Slot 1 system for a Voodoo 2 to fully spread its wings. Yes, that was my thoughts exactly. A decent slot 1 motherboard plus Vodoo 2 plus a fast …

Which voodoo card plus mainboard plus cpu to pick for best backword compability for 1996-1998 gaming

I am back again with another Voodoo Question. lol My inital plan to get 2 complete systems with Voodoo 3 lead to nothing so I had to change my plany for my second righ. After doing some more reseach about the history of 3dfx gaming I came to to conclusion that the most interesting area in glide …

Re: socket 370 i815 pentium 3 1 ghz coppermine or Athlon Xp 1600 for windows 98 gaming system

I hope you are going to have fun with your new gaming rig. I can fully understand the wish to max out the capabilities of your motherboard. I think in a similar way. i also want to max out asus p2b the fullest. At the moment I am still using a pentium 2 400 mhz but I will max it out with pentium 3 …

Re: socket 370 i815 pentium 3 1 ghz coppermine or Athlon Xp 1600 for windows 98 gaming system

Hi If you're planning to use a Barton later, then you will need 400Mhz fsb. The ASRock supports 400 MHz fsb while the MSI does not. I you keep using the XP1600+ then either will do (from the fsb perspective) Thanks for the info. In that case, I will go with the ASRock then. For the first couple of …

Re: socket 370 i815 pentium 3 1 ghz coppermine or Athlon Xp 1600 for windows 98 gaming system

Sorry for digging out the thread again but have another question. The negotiations with the guy that is building me the rig have come to an end. I will get the athlon xp 1600 system as I have said. I can either choose the Asrock K7S8XE or the MSI K7T266 Pro motherboard. The Asrock would be a bit …

Re: socket 370 i815 pentium 3 1 ghz coppermine or Athlon Xp 1600 for windows 98 gaming system

Thanks for sharing your impressions. Your more powerful rig seems to be interesting as well. Yep, I finally got 22 fps instead of 13. In game with official p166 spec in 1999. Have never played Dungeon Keeper 2 so far but it is really amazing how hard it is to get dungeon keeper 2 running properly.

Re: socket 370 i815 pentium 3 1 ghz coppermine or Athlon Xp 1600 for windows 98 gaming system

Thanks for the further info about the potential over heating problem of the 9800 @trashbytes and others. It was very interesting read. I als have to admit that besides the potential drawbacks the 9800pro is a interesting card for me due to the power the card has to offer. But for the games I am …

Re: socket 370 i815 pentium 3 1 ghz coppermine or Athlon Xp 1600 for windows 98 gaming system

When I was researching about the 9000 series I seems that only the 9800pro has the overheating issues. I could not find any article that was saying the same stuff about earlier cards. This does not mean anything of course because my search was rather superfical. You need to look deeper into the …

Re: socket 370 i815 pentium 3 1 ghz coppermine or Athlon Xp 1600 for windows 98 gaming system

I remember Ti4200 + Barton 2500 being the classic bang-for-your-buck gaming combination back in the day. Or Radeon 9600 Pro, if you were able to stretch your budget and spend an extra $50 or so. Funnily enough, Radeon 9600 Pros are now much cheaper than Ti4200s. Thanks for your the info. No I would …

Re: socket 370 i815 pentium 3 1 ghz coppermine or Athlon Xp 1600 for windows 98 gaming system

athlon xp cpus still tend to be affordable. i picked up an xp 1800 palomino a couple months ago for $6 total shipped. you could easily bump that system to an xp 2500 barton or higher. That's not a bad idea. It did not occur to me but after checking out the prices you are right. It would not cost a …

Re: socket 370 i815 pentium 3 1 ghz coppermine or Athlon Xp 1600 for windows 98 gaming system

Athlon / Socket A systems are also generally cheaper. Probably still not old enough or underrated. As it was previously mentioned, it can be hard to find a motherboard without faulty capacitors. Socket A are probably the most affected motherboards. I have 2 or 3 socket A systems with good caps.... …
