Answering a dead post, but I was able to get OPL sound working (no XG) with the driver built in to XP installs. Installing the official driver linked above only gave me XG sound. Just thought I'd ask to see if anyone's managet to get FM and XG MIDI working at the same time - in any OS. It would be nice! Been having some fun setting up this machine, I ended up installing XP as for some reason Windows 98 had trouble copying files over. I think it might be an issue with the 40gb Maxtor drive I put in it. Seems very happy with XP though... Anyway, it's noisy, and the main reason is the stock CPU fan. …

Removing the second HD has also removed the error it seems. The machine didn’t like the drive from the start so I’ll do without it! Actually seems more responsive now, too. Felt sluggish before.

Check the device ID on that multimedia audio device. For the ESS Solo-1 it should be PCI\VEN_125D&DEV_1969 If it's different then it's not an ESS Solo-1 Thanks for this. Sorted - ish - found XP stock driver here. https://mictests.com/drivers/yamaha/yamaha-wd … -windows-xp-x86 YMF FM is gloriously rough. Would be nice to have XG at the same time but I suspect it won't happen.

I had no luck with a cheap USB 2.0 card - it resulted in a blank screen at bootup. Tried a few bios tweaks and decided not to bother with it. Which USB 2.0 cards for old motherboards
