That is often suggested. I have seen it done. JUST VERY CAREFULLY VERIFY THAT IT IS INDEED PIN 28 before you cut.

486 board might need legacy -5v, which modern atx psu does not supply. See also ' voltage blaster ' and pals. I did not use many vlb cards; i was young and poor back then. I just vaguely recall pain with mine, concerning it and my vlb ide controller. I can't recall the specifics. I vaguely recall the card constantly trying to creep out of the slot. PCI with my first pentium was much nicer, that I do recall.

Older versions of ontrack disk manager have a low-level formatter. I would advise using the bios routine in the controller card using debug though. If the controller is an rll controller, the routine in the card should do it as rll.

I'd argue in favor of a different card for vlb. The pci tridents are pretty good, but I recall pain and suffering from my vlb one. Ymmv.

I would explore 'signal not in range' as a valid source of 'no video', since you arent getting the 'no video' beep code, before deep-6'ing that gpu. Seriously, try it on that old monitor first.

The Identity string for this bios is: 40-0001-ZZ1491-00111111-070791-OPTIWB and declares copyright 1990. The lookup code for manufacturer ID 1491 is President Technologies. We should try looking there.

You said the bios is OK, does this mean you dumped it? If so, can I see a copy of the dump? The ID strings inside may point to a board oem. (Wang used outside oems like tulip and pals)

It's just me, but i'd rather use ezbios with the memory area relocation driver, than have to deal with having a nic or other source of adaper rom squatting in the umb region.

that board clearly uses an isa riser board. Have you tried starting with the riser removed, and onboard vga?

Fairly confident the lif socket disables the smt onboard qfd when populated in an either-or way. Eg, if you have a snazzy overdrive to pop in there or something.

Isolate gpu as culprit: Remove gpu from system, and use it in a known working test bench. It's possible the monitor does not like the refresh rate. If you have a sync/scan converter, try using it. If you have an old crt, try using it. I had a similar problem with an hdmi SBC, that did not fully …
