Thank you for the replies, I have now experienced it. SpeedDisk and Disk Doctor did look as useful alternatives to Windows ME tools supplanted to 98, but the rest, TSRs, bloat, all typical Nortons sadly.

SANDRA 2001 results did not match my spreadsheet of results for many systems I built in early 2000s, so I believe I used SANDRA 2003. I cannot locate a copy, every site seems to skip from 2001 to 2005. Does anyone have a link. Sorry if this is not allowed.

Sorry for double post, but I found a method using HDTune to check where the drive access time drops off, and set partition size accordingly. I've been allocating between 4-10% of the the drive with good results. I cannot remember how we figured it 20 plus years ago, but this will do.
