Re: Abandonware and Dosbox

Lei, While when you're not being hostile I pretty much agree with you, I still don't agree with some of your logic. To use Sierra games as an example, pretty much no games have been tampered with so much by 'haxorz' that they would obscure a technical DOSBox report. And I don't think anyone here is …

Re: Abandonware and Dosbox

el Pusher, with due respect, as someone who admins 2 Sierra forums, I'd hardly call this a 'flame war'. Everyone's tried hard to be civil (aside from a couple). I won't add to what I've already said, except to say: The best solution? Freeware. 3DRealms (Joe Seigler Mostly) releases games every few …

Re: Abandonware and Dosbox

I guess the thing is, I'm not a regular (50-odd posts in 4 years ;) ). The communities I hang out in are Sierra-based, and sure, lots of my friends can use DOSBox. But that's through effort and self-teaching, not through a lifetime of DOS usage. I definitely agree about DOS games cliques, and it's …

Re: Abandonware and Dosbox

Nice, Leileilol. I guess although I'm 20and so Windows-oriented, I benefited from using a Windows 3.1 machine where DOS was important, and before that an Amstrad where everything was DOS based, so cd, dir, cls, edit and the works are pretty second nature to me. I think the point about paying for …

Re: Abandonware and Dosbox

And I agree. I want to quickly move to apologise if I came on a little strong. I agree, my comment about you generalising is wrong. My bad. I guess I mean in the broader sense, but you're clearly not talking about that. Yeah, and I also agree that DOSBox should be protected, and that obvious …

Re: The Incredible Machine sound and music

From the QuestStudios forums very recently: "The music uses all 16 channels indeed, but it also uses a pitch bend sensitivity of 12, while General MIDI uses 2 by default. Selecting "General MIDI" in the install program, then running the game, correctly sets the appropriate RPN controllers to set the …

Re: Lost in Time 0.65 update

I'm having the exact same problem in DOSBox 0.70. I wonder if rolling back to 0.60/1/2 would help, since some people claimed they got it working fine in it years ago. (Although, the game technically loads fine, it just hangs at this Jarlath sequence). I wonder why making an image would help.. Still, …

Re: Abandonware and Dosbox

Well, you (Dominus) are generalising. I pretty much agree with the sentiments of avatar and Hazekel. Although I agree about those sorts of posts (see later) I've had this discussion at my forums before (I run the Sierra music website, Sierra Music Central). My personal view is pretty controversial …

Re: King's Quest VII Help

in DOS
MiniMax wrote: Is this a DOS game? Was DLL's present in the DOS era? I'm sorry, but "Quote of the Day!". That's gold 😀 If you want to contact me privately, you can upload the CD to my webspace and I'll DL it and try to get it working for you. I'm sure it can be done. - Spike

Re: Sierra compilations confirmed!

Yeah, so do I. Never seen that before! Anyways, it's much of a muchness. Point is, you'd be pretty stupid to buy these packs generally speaking, and more so if all you wanted was KQ6 WIN. I would suggest they'd put something widely used like DOSBOX over FreeDOS, but regardless, it "ain't gonna be …

Re: SCI0 problems

in Speedset
Updating, I'm pretty sure I was wrong back then. Windows music ISN'T too fast. God knows what I was on back then (there is a Sierra WIN music error, though, but that's another story). However Speedset does nothing when used with later SCI1 games, as I posted years ago. SQ6, KQ7, GK1, QFG4, etc etc …

Re: Space Quest 6 problem

in Speedset
We've been there and done this before. I've tried gettign this fixed for years. The simple fact is Speedset does nothing for later SCI1/SCI32/VESA games, LSL6 CD and beyond. Works for KQ6CD, about the last one it works for. It certainly doesn't for QFG4, and SQ6 and such. I've never got a straight …

Re: Sierra compilations confirmed!

According to NewRisingSun, the "hi-res" versions in KQ6 Windows are "butt-ugly", so I wonder if that's valid.. And, this is disgraceful. Right up there with 3DRealms saying "don't write negative things about us". 20 bucks is hardly a king's ransom? Sure is a lot to pay for games not made by …

Re: The hatred of DosBox

I have to confess, that although I run a Sierra-music based website I actually don't use DOSBOX. But it's only *partially* laziness and that I don't quite get everything about it, it's mainly that I have both a Windows 95 PC and that most Sierra games will run fine (in XP) without DOSBOX. However I …

Re: A REALLY weird problem concering sound cards

I'd just like to point out that this old topic is still relevant. I dug out Boppin' yesterday and tried it. Works fine under XP normally (except music problems, obviously scratchy digital audio and slightly wonky MIDI) but crashes in VDM Sound (well, just pauses) when a piece of Sound Blaster …
