Re: Use DosBox NOT Virtual PC

boyofdestiny wrote: For windows stuff go for WINE (it supports win16 stuff pretty well in my experience), qemu for anything else (or virtual box). Yeah all Free Software, runs on multiple platforms... Interesting though it would be, there's no WINE for Windows yet that I've heard of.

Most interesting, thanks. The problem with i815 (which is what I currently have) is that it only takes 512 MB of RAM; I obtained another 512 MB stick recently, which is what touched off these musings. I guess I won't be doing anything terribly useful with it.

Re: Building a vintage pentium system...

98lite is probably as fast as 95C because it uses the 95 shell. Well, the whole point of 98lite is that it can use the old shell that did not have Internet Explorer integration - which 95C also has. And I have found 98SE WDM drivers to be considerably more stable than VXDs, though as you say those …

Re: Building a vintage pentium system...

As for OS, definitely go with Win95C (OSR 2.5 I think). You can find a copy of that rather easily. :) It will be much faster than 98 on such a machine. 98 is slower than 95C? That's news to me. I would think the primary difference would only be 98's improved stability. Anyway, if speed is a concern …

Socket 5? Looks like you'd be fine with Socket 7. http://support.intel.com/support/processors/sb/CS-001826.htm I'm not familiar with any particular advantage that one Intel chipset might have over another, so long as it supports the features you want. The graphics card you want will depend on what …

Mobos with SDRAM and AGP?

in PC Emulation
I've still got quite a bit of SDRAM and some fairly nice AGP cards lying around that I'd like to put to good use. SDRAM, alas, seems to have vanished from use some time ago, and AGP doesn't look too common anymore either. Could someone please suggest a good motherboard that takes both SDRAM and AGP …

Re: About Microsoft Word 5...

in DOS
Well, I've seen something like that for WordPerfect 5.1 for DOS at http://www.columbia.edu/~em36/wpdos/graphicsmode.html , but of course that is probably specific to WP5.1. There may be a similarly-specific driver for Word. That site also suggests http://www.tamedos.com/ .

Er, what? Sysinternals has been carrying on in its merry way ever since the buyout. Very little has changed. And how exactly would the "latest rootkits" be fundamentally different from other rootkits? (Actually, now that I look at it, there's no longer any sign of their Windows 98 NTFS driver, but …

The first rootkit doodad that comes to mind is RootkitRevealer from http://www.sysinternals.com . Anyway, I think what might be helpful here is the Filter Check Tool. I think that generally the problems that fixes are a little more lower-level, but maybe it's the case here. http://www.cdr-zone.com/ …

Re: DosBox 0.70 and img files

Is the read-only attribute set on the IMG file itself? (This is quite likely if the IMG file used to be on a CD-ROM.) Or perhaps you are running DOSBox as a user that does not have write-priviledges for the IMG file?
