Re: A very strange Wordstar bundle!

From '79? The packaging looks quite a bit like the version that I bought in 1988. What is the key combination to position to the top of the document? Is it ^QR or ^CB? (MicroPro, later WordStar International, seems to have rewritten WordStar at some point and changed the key combinations.) Sincerely …

Re: Tho thirds of screen only scrolling

So what is the resolution of your screen ? Does windowed mode work correctly ? maybe give output=ddraw and fullresolution=1024x768 and aspect=true a try ? I have previously reported this problem. It seems to have something to do with refreshing and overlapped windows when one switches between …

Re: gwbasic: 60300 byte free

what does this limit imply? does it mean i can write 60300 bytes of source code(about 1000+ lines i think), or that the translated binary instructions at 60300 bytes long, or i can store 60300 bytes of data? It's for the tokenized binary representation of your code, plus data. There are things like …

Re: Name your machines

I named my first pc "Miss Piggy" after someone's naming his computer "the piglet" after mainframes being called "pigs". My current (modern) system is "Digby". I hope to go to Digby, Nova Scotia, Canada some day. Sincerely, Gene Wirchenko

Re: Running a .BAS program on DOSBOX

I am trying to run a gwbasic program using the DOSBOX.CONF file. I can get gwbasic started, but not get it to load or run a file using commands within the autoexec part of the DOSBOX.CONF file. I am glad to see you got your problem solved. I still use BASIC for quick programs and utilities. Have …

Re: Latest Version of "Classic" BASIC?

If you're looking for the predecessor of QBASIC, have a look at GW-BASIC or MBASIC. MBASIC is older than GW-BASIC and can compile programs. It was popular in the days of CP/M and the Altair 8800 and IMSAI 8080 computers. As well as a compiler, it also came as an interpreter. Sincererly, Gene …

Re: DOS pgm can write but not read

I have an '80s DOS program that can create and save small files, and also load them for use later. Within DOSBOX I am able to save a file to the mounted "A" drive (a folder on my c: drive). However, when I attempt use the pgm to load the file back in, I get a disk error. What could be the cause …

Re: cycles = max

Which OS ? running multiple instances of DOSBox should not really be a problem, given that most systems nowadays are multicored and each dosbox process would use 1. Windows 7. I do run multiple instances of DOSBox from time to time at 70000 cycles. There is some slowdown, but I live with it. (Video …

Re: cycles = max

I determined the best cycles setting on my system by iteration and put that value (70000) in my DOSBox config file. I have been running DOSBox like this for a couple years now. Given the above discussion, I tried setting cycles to max instead. I then restarted DOSBox, and the result was that DOSBox …

Re: cycles = max

Depends on the application you run in DOSBox. If you set to max then it will not set cycles to higher than your computer can support so you're good. If your application is still running too slow then you need to upgrade your processor. There's no point in showing the value to a regular user since …

Re: cycles = max

Is there a way to know when cycles is set to max? What about the cycles command? My system has cycles set to 70000 in the setup. cycles then prints 70000. If I do cycles max then cycles prints max. If I do cycles 70000 then cycles prints 70000 again. Sincerely, Gene Wirchenko

Re: Memory Use

Another clue. I just renamed a file outside of DOSBox. I then tried to access the file (using the new name) and got the out-of-memory error from my editor. I tried refreshing the directory cache and tried again. This time it worked. I did copy another file to the old name. I did not think at the …

Re: Memory Use

DOSBox caches file operations, its internals don’t have to match the actual data. If you have another program, DOS or Windows, accessing the same data, you have to expect file corruption. Especially database programs are vulnerable. No DOSBox mod was proven to fix this due to that caching of file …

Re: Memory Use

Is there any chance the file you were trying to load was manipulated externally either by you or the host operating system (windows, linux, whatever your using)? I think DOSBox assumes the files are not changing unless it's changing them, that's the whole reason for the shortcut: CTRL-F4 Update …

Memory Use

This is a general question about memory use in DOSBox. I use DOSBox mainly to run a WordStar-style editor and a few utilities. I know that this is not the designed-for use. I just tried to edit a file. The editor reported an out of memory error and would not load it. I thought that odd and tried …

Re: Empire

collector wrote: This? http://www.mobygames.com/game/empire_ Nope. The link says the game is based on Risk. The Empire that I am thinking of did not have the regions that Risk has. It was 60X100 with "+" used for land and "." for water. Sincerely, Gene Wirchenko

Empire

I used to have a DOS game called EMPIRE. It was player against computer. I deleted it at one point, but would like to get a copy again. I think it might have been included on the intro software disks from my first ISP. I do not know if it was commercial or not. It is not any of the versions on …
