Re: 40 Column Text Mode Issues

I don't remember any games with 320x200x16 mode displaying in monochrome on composite displays. Well, as shown in the source code bit posted before, Sierra explicitly turns on the color burst bit in 320x200x16 mode, so they of course appear in color. The programmer's comments say it's a BIOS bug …

Re: 40 Column Text Mode Issues

Thank you for posting these screenshots. So the ugly variant is the way to go for Decathlon? Too bad. I think I'm still going to offer the second, cleaner-looking version as an option. That's five options now: - color decoder: standard NTSC/US fleshtone improvement/Japanese fleshtone improvement - …

Re: 40 Column Text Mode Issues

It's a result of artifact colors. If you zoom in on Servo's screenshots (especially Troll's Tale), you'll see those lines as well, especially in gray and green areas. I can make the Gaussian filter harsher to hide it, but that will make the text blurrier as well. Of course, what is missing are the …

Re: 40 Column Text Mode Issues

I'll check that out Thanks. Could you also make two screenshots of Microsoft Decathlon? One from the calibration screen, one from the title screen, preferably using the IBM 5150 rather than the Tandy, because the font really gets important here. I'm asking because I'm not sure how much luminance …

Re: 40 Column Text Mode Issues

Mentioned earlier was the use of unused bits to alter the hue on some CGA cards I don't know how many "some" is, it just was that way on my cheap no-name far east CGA clone (I don't think a high-quality branded product would have given up on me just because I wrote a wrong value into a CRTC …

Re: 40 Column Text Mode Issues

Very interesting considering that MobyGames' KQ1 PC Booter screenshots were taken using the real CGA. Yes, but you don't know the hue setting on his TV card back then. I am correct in saying that the CGA does not doublescan for a composite color monitor or TV, it outputs 320x200 or 640x200, not …

Re: 40 Column Text Mode Issues

Autoguess tries to automatically guess which "hue" setting is correct by looking at unused register bits of port 0x3d9. It's not how the actual hardware works (hence 'unused'). Qbix wants to keep it because he likes how this incidentially makes KQ1 look like on MobyGames without any user adjustment. …

Re: 40 Column Text Mode Issues

Yes, but I don't believe anyone has confirmed actually hearing it via Tandy DAC yet (although I could be mistaken) Well, as I wrote before, I heard it with my Tandy DAC emulator, if that counts. He's concerned that if AGI games detect the presence of Tandy sound hardware It's impossible to detect …

Re: 40 Column Text Mode Issues

Incidentally, running the game without the switch will cause a crush sooner or later I wasn't aware of such power. So, I don't see why it shouldn't be included in the next release of DOSBox It's not finished, it requires 16-bit or 24-bit color, and it's too slow; that's why. I thought Qbix already …

Re: 40 Column Text Mode Issues

Why? Because an incorrect aspect ratio is unseemly to behold. On a real TV or color composite monitor, with an output of 640 pixels would the picture still be underscanned or would some of the sides be cutoff? TVs are overscanned, therefore, some parts of the picture get cut off. This is why the …

Re: 40 Column Text Mode Issues

the CGA is cutting off every eighth pixel or inserting an "in between color" pixel in between every two sets of three similarly-colored pixels in order to keep the picture underscanned. That's not the CGA but Servo's TV capture card which does this. Professional digital TV equipment stores an NTSC …

Re: 40 Column Text Mode Issues

(SQ4 SCIDHUV -N) Does anyone know about it and can explain it? The -N switch makes the interpreter look for SCRIPT.%03d-style file names instead of the default %u.scr-style file names. Thanks to the switch, the interpreter finds the SCRIPT.000 files, which contains the 315 max score. Without the …

Re: 40 Column Text Mode Issues

My point was that Ultima 3's reference card is so crappy that I'm not surprised at all they wouldn't mention it. It also doesn't explicitly tell you how to run the game. I wouldn't call that knowledge "unofficial" either. I don't think "no one" ever knew that composite is the way to go; those who …

Re: 40 Column Text Mode Issues

If it was intended, then it would likely have been mentioned in the PC Reference Card that came with these ports. Uh, have you ever seen Ultima 3's PC reference card? ;) I often wondered why the fanbase never caught on with all those serrated graphics? I think if there's a better looking version …

Re: 40 Column Text Mode Issues

I see, so while a monochrome composite monitor might ignore the color burst signal Then it's not a "monochrome composite" monitor, but just a "monochrome" monitor. :) The only game that I know of that uses the 320 mode officially is Microsoft Decathlon. "Officially"? Ok, the words "composite …

Re: 40 Column Text Mode Issues

How could generating a color burst signal and modulating the I and Q signals affect a monochrome monitor in any way? A monochrome monitor technically does not know NTSC, PAL, SECAM or any other color encoding system. It only knows luminence, the Y signal and anything extra is filtered out. Because …
