Re: LCD, fresh rate & DOS games

When I run one of these old "mode 13h" DOS games, do you know why my LCD monitor does not select a resolution such as 640x480(xCool? (I know it is capable of 640x480 resolution, because when Hexen initially loads up, this is the resolution that it picks. But when the game is about to begin, it …

Quick Q about vid card comparison (Vesa Compatibility)

I just got a 4MB Diamond Stealth 3D 2000 (S3-ViRGE Chipset). I was mainly looking for DOS graphics performance but the amount of RAM on the card I bought sold me. It was only 5 bucks. But looks like Tseng's line of chipsets seem to be the best. But then if you want to get one, it will cost you an …

Re: DOS Games Running too fast?

in DOS
It's funny because all classic doom engine based games, Duke3d engine based games, and for the most part almost all of my dos games work just fine, it's just these few games that tend to hyperspeed the game. I don't want to use DosBox, I'm trying to run a real dos box without using emulators.

DOS Games Running too fast?

in DOS
Well, not all of them but several of them do. Alien Trilogy runs way too fast. Not just in game play but idle times in the menu screen as well. The game seems to run at double the normal speed. This also happens in the dos version of Quake, and Nerves Of Steel. Here are my dos box specs: AOpen AX- …

Re: Installing / adding 'real' DOS on a Win98 system?

in DOS
MS-DOS 7.x (which is included with Win95, 98, 98SE and, yes, even WinME) is fully-functional as a standalone DOS version. Just to say something here. Windows ME comes with MS-DOS 8, which was the last version of DOS Microsoft ever created (And I've heard mix thoughts about this version too). When …

Re: Ensoniq Support! Please!!

I think the cards are defective. They were tested on a WinXP system with an auto-installation before they were shipped; I tested them on WinXP and nothing. These cards are defective! (No wonder why the drivers didn't work). They were sent in non anti-static bubblewrap anyway, so go figure.

Ensoniq Support! Please!!

Well I just wrote a very lengthy thread about legacy sound cards and was introduced to the Ensoniq line of old ISA cards... Specifically the Soundscape series. I grabbed a couple of S-2000's off ebay and they seem to be working in a way.. but I don't think I'm configuring them right, and the …

Re: The Legacy Card of Choice...?

in DOS
Heck they are both almost identical, but Elite has that ESP board and the revised ROM. Well you've convinced me to get one! I think I'm going to get both, since each of these legacy cards have their own unique cool sound. Definately have to go get an adlib. BTW I've seen lots of old Roland boards …

Re: The Legacy Card of Choice...?

in DOS
Here is an article which gives a good overview about all aspects of old soundcards Wow awesome link! I was checking out the sounds of the older cards and I rather like the distinct older sound of the Adlib card. Even though it rated the Descent sound clip as bad, I liked it. I especially liked the …

Re: The Legacy Card of Choice...?

in DOS
Hmm.. interesting stuff. It seems they manufactured sound cards for uhmm .. specific sound devices like the Adlib and such. I know myself that Adlib is older than SB16, since Wolfenstein 3D and Blakestone have an Adlib sound option in the sounds option menu. My concern is that with the OPL3 card, …

Re: The Legacy Card of Choice...?

in DOS
The line-out is rather weak and although it is less noisy than my old SB16 ASP, it sounds cheesy, like a cheap transistor radio Well I'm kind of understanding what you're getting at here. Not for the same reason but at the same time I'm having difficulties managing this ... umm PnP I guess CT4170 …

Re: The Legacy Card of Choice...?

in DOS
I'm not sure exactly where the system came from that had the CT4170, but it did have an HP Floppy drive and the case did kinda look like it was HP material.. but there's no logos or labels on the case itself. Other than that. I know that sb16 model is hopping on eBay auctions. Here's a close up pic …

The Legacy Card of Choice...?

in DOS
Well I'm getting real into the vintage gaming again, (hey the sound and music is the half of it!) and I've been doing some research... I just pulled out a CT4170 outta this broken machine and it's running in my other dos box, haven't really tried it in DOS gaming yet, still configuring the os' for …

Re: SB16 Emulation with Audigy 2 + 4.1?

in DOS
Yes that is exactly what I needed it for. For real-dos mode only. Although having emulation in Windows 98 would be nice, but I haven't fully checked to see what the configuration is for the legacy codec/drivers in Windows 98, if there is one. I know usually with Windows 98, and the older SB cards, …

Re: SB16 Emulation with Audigy 2 + 4.1?

in DOS
Returning to your original question, a patch is required to make the Audigy 2 work with the emulation driver. It can be obtained via the following Sourceforge link: http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/mpxplay/AUDIGY12.ZIP?download Just run audigy12.exe after sbinit.com is finished, and you should be …
