If you list it as a buy it now with a high price you'll get it eventually... I think this will go near 100 Euro though. Just look at those others listed starting at a low price.

Exactly. What is interesting is that Terratec made the Gold 16/96 with only the ESS chip onboard, but it also made another card, Sound System Gold 16, that has both an ESS chip and a REAL OPL onboard. Now why would they do that if ESS OPL emulation is that good? Maybe people were willing to pay more …

Very cool! I'll see if I can make a recording of an ESS based card for you in the near future (Terratec Gold 16/96). From what I remember the ESS OPL emulation sounds surprisingly like a real OPL. You can hear the differences here and there, but they are small.

Nice, but what does this show that isn't expected beforehand? The AWE64 doesn't have a real OPL chip so naturally it will sound off. And that the SB 1.5 and Pro 2.0 will sound exactly the same besides some colouring caused by the output circuit is no surprise. This test doesn't help people looking …

I will do a FM music comparision video soon though. I always wondered "how different" the AWE64 FM sounds compared to the OPL chip. Check out the attached program. It plays OPL music files. You'll understand why people want real OPL if you do such a test. OPL emulation sounds generally just as bad …

That makes sense. I wasn't aware of the apparently big differences between the CS chips, but I do remember now there also is a CS4231 found on the Gravis Ultrasound MAX and it surely doesn't do hardware SB Pro emulation there either. If it did, wow, the whole "looking for the perfect sound card" …

Yeah, sure; I'd like some. I don't know what is on the board now, but it sure is no 12ns. What does that OPTi chip do exactly if the card has already a CS and OPL chip?
