Oh ok so it's based on cpu useage. Well the couple protected mode games I tried seem rather slow. For example in the dos window the text doesn't "appear" but rather slowly show up. Kinda like being signed on to a 300 baud BBS or something. Why would CPU_CYCLES_LOWER_LIMIT be set too = 100 then? btw …

cycles=max doesn't seem to do anything. Best I can tell it keeps the cycles at 100 and they never changes. Is there something platform specific I'm overlooking here?

Just a quick update.. I tried cycles=auto.. Not sure why x-port never included that option. Anyways it does a pretty decent job of balancing out the sound vs game speed, especially for older games. But something like ultima underworld runs a bit choppy so bumping up the cycles manually seems to help …

mt32 emulation is very demanding currently, so if you really need some music maybe target the 0.74 default adlib code (which the very most people know from "back then" due to the widespread nature of adlib-compatible cards and games). GUS and MT32 sound is by far better than SB sound and both only affect the core "performance" when a game is actually setup to "use" them. So adding them does not affect anything except give all the "fanboi's" out there more choice. Isn't munt a totally seperate project? I'm using the mt32 code …

I already updated the core to .072 and got the dynamic recompiler working. See my fourth post. I also tried .074 but it uses more memory than .072 and thus makes it impossible to play games that need up to 20 megs of RAM (command and conquer series and a couple other games). I can actually start game X, stop game x, start game x about three times and it will happen. But only when the game uses ems or xms. But it will happen from game to game as well. Say I start Game X, then Game Y, and then it will hang on game Z.

A game that uses xms or ems (dos4gw loader) will just sit there at the dos4gw message (cursor still blinking) like it is stuck in some weird loop or something.
