Re: seemingly strange harddisk behaviour...

in Milliways
Also can you run it as slave and boot off another drive, you could migrate your data like that if windows has been corrupted. I've had to do that before. I've learned to never put valuable data on your C:\ partition that way if Windows craps itself you can format C: and install Windows again …

Re: seemingly strange harddisk behaviour...

Well, it had a lot of savegames and pictures on it, so.... And, it(the very same disk) works just fine right now - playing as we speak. Anyone know why the botched startup(and MyDocuments) was still there even after a image restore ? Further google investigations have clued me in on the persistant …

seemingly strange harddisk behaviour...

in Milliways
just in case someone in here are vaguely familiar with these things.... My (40gb IDE seagate) hdd suddenly wouldn't start up, or rather, winXP was complaining about something. (had just fiddled ever so slightly in bios with some harmless settings) Ended up with that 'did not load properly last time, …

Re: Win98 chipset drivers on modern hardware?

in Milliways
umm... the seller suggested to 'update the firmware'.... I'm hoping he meant the bios... But, I don't wanna fiddle with that right now, and yes - am looking for other board variants anyway - and had to return the borrowed CPU to the store, so no more testing regardless, for now. I DO assume …

Re: What DOS game are you playing right now?

in Milliways
The usual staples consist of Master of Orion 2 and Ascendancy. And the occational Magic the Gathering-Planeswalker(or is that a Win game, not sure). But been a while since last time, so... correct answer would probably be 'none', for the previous 2 weeks at least. (HoMM IV does not fit the …

Re: Win98 chipset drivers on modern hardware?

in Milliways
heh, well, actually... I DO have the PE :s-face: (which is the reason for my ranting here) Will try the escape button later (when I get home). Though I can't really see why that should have any effect. As for the bios, check my first message(previous page). Bios states P2.00 when 'inside', as well …

Re: Win98 chipset drivers on modern hardware?

in Milliways
Well, I've now tried starting with an AGP card instead of PCI. And it does actually show the CARD's bios/post info, BUT then it just goes into 'black mode' after that. I'm able to get into the bios(pressing F2 blindly), but never do any POST messages appear, apart from the 'boot device not found' …

Re: Win98 chipset drivers on modern hardware?

@Malik: Lucky you... I just accidentally bought the 775i65PE. (damn Intel/Asrock and their naming schemes - Dual Core is NOT equal to Core2Duo, ugh - had to borrow a CPU from the local shop just to test it) Anyway, was wondering about POST, as I cannot see ANY post messages, just the final one about …

Re: My retro systems

@ solikka: Just curious: why have 2 almost identical Rolands in that first system ? Is the SCC-1 just used for the midi port/MPU401, or... ? PS: not the cheapest I've seen, but still.... http://cgi.ebay.com/Vintage-Roland-CM-64-Sound-Module_W0QQitemZ130328923114QQcmdZViewItemQQptZKeyboards_ …

Re: Windows 7 - which version ?

in Milliways
Well, price is probably an issue, hence my question... 😎 Anyway, it'll probably be some time before I actually buy this thing.... (my hardware collection is still not even containing a recent C2D CPU, not to mention an i7, so...)

Re: Windows 7 - which version ?

in Milliways
Ok, so maybe I'm asking the 'wrong' question (or making up problems that don't exist), but... what I was(am) wondering about was if there are any differences in the LEVEL of control of certain functions - as in 'you can change these settings for a particular 'area' in Pro, but a few more settings …

Re: Windows 7 - which version ?

in Milliways
Heh, this must be my first ever pinned post! :happyhappy: Anyways, been checking out that other thread and links inside - but my question is still unanswered as it stands. Though one could argue that the level of user control is the same, regardless of professional or ultimate, and that extra …

Windows 7 - which version ?

in Milliways
Ok, so this may be far from the 'best' forum to post this, but.... :sweatdrop: Was wondering, if level of control over settings and whatnot is the issue, disregarding any extra features or whatever - which version of Win7 would be the best ? (in parallell to XP home vs Pro) Would the Ultimate have …

One VIAble solution may be VIA boards, Asrock perhaps ? http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?s=5c9753615b91c15bdce9dad30133c546&showtopic=97588&st=160 This board has both AGP and PCIE and C2D, though there may be sound issues...: http://www.pixmania.co.uk/uk/uk/636852/art/asrock/4coredual-sata2-lga- …

Re: What monitor do you use?

Well, as I'm probably expanding this topic to more than intended, I'll try to be 'brief'. But for those interested, here are my first and totally unstructured impressions, as in whatever popped into my head: (mind you, I was an LCD virgin(!) until today, so I may have some odd comments) - when they …
