Re: What new console will you be buying this holiday season?

in Milliways
There doesn't seem to be a whole lot of PS3 exclusives that I'd want to spring for. Infamous 1 & 2, Ni No Kuni, the newer God of War and Final Fantasy games, and I guess The Last of Us and Heavy Rain. True. If you have an XBox 360 then there's not too much point in buying a PS3, or vice versa, as …

Re: The old Timeshift demo does not start

in Windows
I don't know what video card is in the desktop, (I'm not at home, but I think it's an Nvidea, though) but the OS is Windows 7 64 bit. Still, I'm not too bothered that one demo won't run, especially since the full game runs fine, so don't worry about, and thanks to everyone for their help.

Re: The old Timeshift demo does not start

in Windows
Perhaps the APITrace tool demonstrated in http://www.vogons.org/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=37048&p=324802 would be useful? Thanks, but it just gives me the error message "Could not determine Time_Shift.trace compression type", though maybe I was doing something wrong. If you know how to use this program, …

Trying to remember the name of a book about computer viruses

in Milliways
Some years back, I read a book about the origin and progression of computer viruses (the book was mainly or totally about the PC), and I'd like to track it down again as it was very interesting, but I can't find my copy (I probably either lost it, gave it away, or lent it out and never got it back), …

Re: The old Timeshift demo does not start

Do you recall if the demo works in Windows XP? You can run hardware-accelerated 3D games in Windows XP using VMware. I've never tried the demo before, so I don't know, but since it's a 2600 demo I assume XP was it's target OS. I didn't know VMWare used 3D cards (I'm so ignorant  ) which is …

Duke Nukem games

in Milliways
Someone mentioned Duke Nukem 3D in another thread, and since it's still such a fantastic game, and Duke appears in so many games, I thought it would be interesting to discuss them, and see what other DN games are available. Personally, I've never played Duke Nukem 1 and 2. I think they're PC-only 2D …

Will there ever be a practical WindowsBox program?

in Milliways
DOSBox is brilliant because it does what DOS gamers want; it boots into a clean, DOS compatible environment whenever you want, and you can alter it's settings for whatever each individual game requires (there might be DOS games that don't yet work on it, I don't know, but at worst DOSBox is still …

Re: The old Timeshift demo does not start

in Windows
Perhaps something specific to nVidia video drivers? I see the error on my non-nVidia system but not on my nVidia system. Maybe, but every other game is working fine on the PC, so I'm reluctant to change anything to get the Timeshift demo working in case I stop others from working, so I'll probably …

Re: Duke Nukem 3D - no mouse

in DOS
There are Windows (and maybe DOS?) ports of the game engine, such as eDuke, which Jorpho mentions. Get it from http://www.eduke32.com/ it's really good. I haven't tried any of the others engine ports, so I can't say which is the best, sorry, but eDuke is great, and has tons of settings, all from the …

Re: The old Timeshift demo does not start

in Windows
have you tried all the compatiblity modes win98 ect Yes, but with no success. To be fair, it was a demo, so maybe they didn't go all out to make sure it ran on all systems, though of course that's no excuse. have you tried swiftshader ? No, because I've never heard of it before! Do you mean this: …

Re: The old Timeshift demo does not start

in Windows
I do know the actual game works in win 7 wild guess backup your user.ini and try mine That was a good idea, thanks, but it didn't work, sadly. So I re-installed the full game, hoping either it would do something to the registry/graphics driver (since I know the full version works) or that I could …

The old Timeshift demo does not start

in Windows
First I should point out that I'm trying to run a demo, not the full game. I already have the full game (Timeshift, 2007, Saber Interactive, Sierra Entertainment), but I recently heard that the original demo was very different from the finished game. The finished game is a so-so but could have been …
