Win98 will run fine on any x86 compatible PC with BIOS. There are problems with more than 512 MB RAM (you need to change some settings) and with CPUs over 2.1 GHz (needs some patching).

It should accept all Coppermines. Yes, it should run the CPU at 100 MHz FSB, but of course the multiplier is fixed, so you get 25% speed penalty. It probably won't run a Tualatin, since it would need a voltage regulator, and as you say it's "quite plane". Personally, I just bought some 850 MHz Intel …

Well, I don't buy every motherboard, but if I see 10 motherboards: some with cache, some with RAM, some with CPUs, then spending 15-20 Euro including shipping is not a problem, since after removing all parts I need I can sell them for a similar price.

I just keep buying old motherboards, when I see cache chips on the photo 😀. Of course sometimes you end up with a bunch of 128 kb 25 ns chips, so you need also some luck (unless the photos of the sold mobo are high-quality so you can see what chips are used).

Have you tried in the Boot Device settings where you choose "Primary Boot Device", "Secondary Boot Device" etc. choosing SCSI (even if it's an EIDE controller)?

It seems there will now be retro-PSUs 😀 The ATX spec dropped the -5V line in one of the latest revisions: ATX12V 2.1 (it wasn't required since ATX12V 1.2), so I probably buy some quality older PSUs before they vanish from the market.

Multiply screen width, screen hight and bit depth in bytes (8 = 1, 16 = 2 etc) and you get the amount of video memory you need. Double and tripple buffering demand 2 or 3 times more memory.
