You can use a serial port for mpu401 uart. Softmpu for dos and Roland serial midi module for windows

Sounds strange cause when i restart in msdos it runs through the whole boot process. Check your clock battery? Windows can change pnp resources and maybe on a cold boot something isn’t set the same?

With the right adapter / cable to convert the game port to din midi you could look into the Roland um-one. I use that method or the serial softmpu method to a mt32-pi. It would for pc as well.

In the short term a sw synth in windows might be best I would look for virtual sound canvas on archive.org. This can run on a Pentium. Another sw synth option are the ones by Yamaha

Serdashop also has an adapter for game port db15 to din Softmpu can output over the serial port and serdashop also has an adapter from serial to din. In windows Roland made a midi driver to serial I’ve used these option to send midi over serial t the mt32-pi Are pci cards your only option?
