Re: FIC 486-PIO3 mobo

I had one of these boards back in the day (1997) when I didn't really know nearly as much about computers, and as I recall it was dreadfully slow no matter what I tried with it (Intel DX4 100, AMD 5x86 133, different memory, cache amounts) . I had a friend who really knew what he was doing who tried …

Re: Cyrix Cx486 DX40

Wow, that is a pretty cool find! I have read about that board in a few places, and a friend had one a long time ago. It really wasn't that slow considering the lack of L2 cache. I think it is a neat board to have just for the historical aspects!!!!! I recall that my friend tried an actual COAST …

Re: My retro 486

I found that the midi on the SB16 with the Yamaha chip sounds more like what I 'remember' the old DOS games sounding like, lets put it that way. The AWE64 midi didn't sound as 'nostalgic' as the midi from the SB16. I'm glad the AWE64's have come out of both my 386 and 486 systems and replaced with …

Re: My retro 386

No, this board doesn't seem to have any type of turbo / de-turbo feature either via switch or keyboard combos that you suggested. It can however be jumpered to run at 33MHz or 25MHz. I have also tracked down a real SoundBlaster Pro 2.0, and boy does it sound better then the AWE64 …

Re: My retro 486

Mike, you need to get rid of Norton 2009, that is probably most of your problem! That 2.4 celly with that much much RAM should surf great, it seems like the newer versions of Norton act much like a virus infection themselves! Switch to ESET NOD32 or Microsoft Security Essentials! Yeah, the 486 …

Re: My retro 486

I'm running a very stripped down version of Win98SE, using the program called '98lite'. I'm actually even using the Win95 file explorer too, as the program allows you to get away from the more resource hungry Win98 explorer. This program is cool, as it allows you to strip away alot of the extra …

Re: My retro 386

Lol, I just noticed the error about the CD-ROM drive too! The sticker on the top of the drive says 32x :happyhappy: ! Guess the factory was confused that day. I think I will pick up a SoundBlaster Pro2, as that seems more period correct. I'm not that fussy about midi, so the Yamaha OPL3 chip will be …

Re: My retro 486

I have played Need for Speed II in 3dfx mode and it plays pretty good, as well as GTA 1 in 3dfx mode. I plan on trying Hexen II next to see how it does. When I have some time I plan on running some Quake benchmarks and posting them up as I'm sure everyone is curious. As mentioned above, I'm thinking …
